A bus has crashed into a lough in Northern Ireland, causing traffic chaos east of Belfast.

The Ulsterbus, which normally carries commuters and school students, ended up in Strangford Lough in County Down at about 6.30am on Wednesday morning after crashing through a sea wall on Portaferry Road.

Translink, the company that operates buses and trains across Northern Ireland, said the driver had been taken to hospital to be assessed, and an investigation was ongoing. He is understood to have sustained minor injuries in the crash.

The bus was lifted out of the water around lunchtime after the road had been closed for several hours.

Kellie Armstrong, a local councillor, said: “I came past the scene on my commute to work this morning. There is a substantial chunk out of the wall on the passenger side.

“The bus driver is lucky he did not sustain worse injuries, and was not thrown through the front window. It was windy and dark this morning, the tide was out at the time of the incident and it is lucky the tide was not in or the bus would have been submerged.”
