Bus company forced to suspend service after youths hurl brick through window

A bus company was forced to suspend a service after a gang of youths hurled a brick through the window of a vehicle.

Vision Bus said it had 'no option' but to pull the number 8 service between Wigan and Leigh following the incident on Wednesday evening (February 3).

The gang targeted the bus as it was travelling along Wigan Road, close to the junction with Eldon Street, at 8pm.

A driver and two passengers were on board at the time. No one was injured, but they were said to be left 'shaken'.

For the residents of Wigan Road, the shocking incident comes as no surprise.

Phil Rigby said: "I didn't see it but it makes sense in Westleigh. This street itself isn't too bad but a lot of kids come from the estate at the far end of the field.

"There's some right little sh**s over that way. They ride mopeds and I've seen a few fights.

"I've had one or two issues myself, which is why I've had cameras put up. I've had people throwing eggs, hitting my car wing mirror, but they're only kids - I'd say about 16-years-old tops.

"I've actually caught them on camera before and I've had a few confrontations but nothing too serious.

"I suppose the lockdown isn't helping because they're probably more bored than usual.

Another neighbour added: "They're just little b******s basically.

"They're running wild around here, p***ing about, there's no control over them."

Chris Smith, director of Vision Bus, said such incidents had become 'increasingly common' over the last year.

He added: "It seems to be a big problem during lockdown.

"I have lost track of how many times this sort of thing has happened in the last 12 months.

"I can probably count on one hand the number of times we had this sort of incident in the previous five years.

"It is an increasing problem with other operators too. It's worrying, to say the least."

In November, Vision were one of two bus companies to suspend services through the Johnson Fold estate in Bolton after a gang of youths hurled bricks at vehicles.

Things became so bad that the other operator, Diamond, announced its 501 service would no longer go through the estate.

Mr Smith said the number 8 service would resume running again from this evening, but did not rule out pulling the service altogether if another incident occurred.

"We have to take it on a day by day basis," he said.

"Pulling the service is the last thing we want to do because people depend on it, but safety is our utmost concern. We can't be putting people's lives at risk from idiots throwing house bricks around.

"It makes you wonder if their parents are concerned about where their children are."
