Bury sports shop raising thousands with 'Thank You NHS' football shirts

Thousands of pounds is being raised for the NHS to aid in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic through an initiative by a Bury sports shop.

Macron Store Manchester is selling one-off shirts from grassroots football clubs.

But in a unique twist, the sportswear will be emblazed with a logo saying 'Thank You NHS', with £5 from every sale being donated to the health service as it battles the COVID-19 crisis.

The move came about after Scottish Premier League side Hibernian launched their new home shirt - which is supplied by Macron, the kit manufacturer for Bolton Wanderers between 2014 and 2019 and also previously sponsored the club's stadium - for the 2020/21 season.

But rather than having a sponsor, the Scottish club chose to place the NHS logo with a thank you message on the front of the jersey.

Hibernian chairman Ronald Gordon said the move was made to say 'thank you and celebrate' the NHS ' in the most meaningful way that we can'.

He said: "In sport we celebrate our heroes and our stars. The NHS have shown they are our true heroes and our stars – they have valiantly cared for and nurtured us through the most difficult and challenging health crisis of our lives."

And Macron Store Manchester, which is based off Bright Street in Bury, has followed suit and made the NHS logo available to all of the clubs it currently supplies kit to, as well as any others who wish to become involved with the fundsraising.

At time of writing, shirts from almost 50 clubs are available and includes several local ones such as AFC Bolton, Bolton Wyresdale AFC, Bury Amateur AFC, and Bury FC Boys, Girls & Women.

Most of the shirts cost £20 and, as of the end of Tuesday, April 28, the initiative has raised £4,000 for the NHS so far, a total which has risen by £1,000 in each of the past four days.

Explaining the move, the Macron Store Manchester website said: "Hibernian FC from the Scottish Premier League have launched their new Macron Home Shirt for the 2020/21 season with 'Thank You NHS' branded on the front of the shirt in place of a sponsor, with the application costs being donated to the NHS to help raise money during the coronavirus pandemic.

"On the back of this, we are launching with clubs something similar and selling a one-off shirt that can be used for training or just for leisure with the club badge and 'Thank You NHS' logo.

"£5.00 from every sale will be donated to the NHS.

"This is open to all of our current clubs, or any club who wants to get involved in raising much needed funds for our NHS."

The shop is temporarily closed due to the coronavirus outbreak, but orders can be made online.
