Bury sees spike in confirmed coronavirus cases - taking total to 549

A spike in confirmed coronavirus patients in Bury has taken the total number of cases to 549.

On Sunday, there were 47 people who tested positive for Covid-19, more than twice as many as the previous day - and nearly five times more than the same day last week.

It comes as the government continues to push for more testing across the country, having scrambled to reach a target of 100,000 tests a day by the end of April.

The spike in Bury is in line with other boroughs across Greater Manchester - including Rochdale, which saw an increase of 51 confirmed case.

The most extreme increases were seen in Oldham, where 100 more people tested positive for the virus; and Wigan, which saw a rise of 74.

This contributed to a large jump in positive cases across the region, with the number of confirmed infections in Greater Manchester rising by 455 to 7,246.

Bury has the third highest rate of infections in the region for every 100,000 people at 289.

In comparison, in Oldham there have been 320 infections per 100,000 while in Manchester centre there have been just 204.
