Bury primary school closes to 'break the cycle' of rising Covid cases

A primary school in Bury has closed to every year group amid rising Covid cases.

Heaton Park Primary School, in Prestwich, had class closures in Nursery, Reception and Years 4, 5 and 6 last week, so took the 'difficult decision' to close altogether.

In a letter to parents, headteacher Paul Lord said: "We have now had several staff members and pupils test positive for coronavirus, and these cases appear to be rising."

The children from the year groups with confirmed cases have been told to self-isolate, while the parents of those in Years 1, 2 and 3 are being told to 'keep a close eye on school correspondence' in case of any more positive tests.

Mr Lord added: "We have tried hard to keep school open and to minimise disruption, however we feel we have to act now to break the cycle. Work will be set on Seesaw and we will look forward to welcoming children back as soon as we can. Thank you all for your continued support."

It comes as schools across Greater Manchester are continuing to send bubbles home on a daily basis following confirmed cases among pupils, staff, or both.

Heaton Park Primary, in Cuckoo Lane, was among the first schools in the region to report a positive case of the virus when schools started back in September. Its Class 2W was sent home to isolate.

In the first half of the autumn term the number of schools affected by the virus reached more than 580. Now we're collating figures of cases confirmed since the start of the October half term break. Last week we reported how cases had been confirmed at 88 schools, but today's figure is expected to top 100.
