Bury Metrolink line suspended - commuters asked to avoid public transport 'if at all possible'

Update:  Services resumed just after 9am Transport for Greater Manchester said, however there may still be some residual delays whilst a full service is restored

Commuters are being asked to work from home or avoid public transport if at all possible after trams were suspended on one of the city's most popular Metrolink lines.

An overhead line fault means no trams are currently operating on the Bury line between Manchester city centre, north Manchester and Bury.

Engineers are currently working to try and resolve the fault and to return tram services to the line " as quickly as possible" Transport for Greater Manchester said.

However pressed for a timescale on social media Metrolink they "couldn't possibly say at this moment in time" how long it would take to fix.

Metrolink tickets are being accepted on the 97, 98 and 135 bus services as an alternative.

However TfGM say social distancing meant that space is "extremely limited."

And worried about overcrowding as we approach rush hour they have said that the buses should be used for "essential travel only."

"Due to an overhead line fault, Metrolink services are currently unable to operate on the Bury line" they said in a statement.

"Ticket acceptance is in place on commercial buses, however space is extremely limited due to social distancing.

"To limit demand on the bus network and ensure social distancing can be maintained, we are advising people to use these buses only if they have no other option.

"Those who can should work from home, use other modes of transport – such as cycling and walking – or re-time their journey until later this morning.

"Engineers are currently working to resolve the fault and return tram services to the line.

"TfGM and KeolisAmey Metrolink apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Numerous frustrated passengers took to social media to report they had been left stood waiting for trams that never arrived.

Thomas Masiko said: "Thank you Metrolink after buying my ticket to Manchester Piccadilly only to find out the trams are cancelled."

All other Metrolink lines are currently operating a good service.
