Bury Council publishes ten-year plan which could decide the town's future

A major plan which will decide what living in Bury is like in ten years has been opened to public scrutiny.

The Bury 2030 project includes proposals for future planning and housing developments, transport infrastructure and roads and improvements to schools.

Bury Council bosses have been working on the scheme for some time and the plans are partly based on ideas submitted by the public over the last year.

Now, residents have another chance to have their say on the proposals and object to anything they think would damage the future of the town.

The 2030 document is linked to a number of other key plans for Greater Manchester as a whole, including the Spatial Framework - which outlines where new housing developments can be built - and the future Clean Air Zone.

Some of the main elements of the Bury project involve increasing the average life expectancy of residents, reducing the carbon footprint of public services to be carbon neutral by 2038 and creating targets to drop levels of crime and anti-social behaviour.

Speaking about Bury 2030, council leader Eamonn O’Brien called on the public to read the proposals and submit their views.

“Bury 2030 started last year with a “Big Conversation” in which 1,100 people from around the borough gave us their thoughts, wishes and concerns," he said.

“This feedback has helped to produce this latest plan – but if it is to succeed, it must have widespread support from all sections of the community: residents and businesses, young and old.

“This is not a ‘council’ plan – this belongs to us all, and we can all play a role to play in making it happen. That’s why we’re inviting everyone to join in and help us produce a plan that is truly backed by Bury.”

Anyone interested in viewing the 2030 proposals can find a copy of the document here.
