Burton's Biscuits confirm Covid outbreak at Edinburgh factory as up to 40 staff self-isolate

Up to 40 staff have been told to self-isolate after a Covid outbreak at an Edinburgh biscuit factory.

Burton’s Biscuit Co. confirmed that approximately 40 staff at its Edinburgh bakery, known as the "home of shortbread", were "absent from the site" after a "proportion of them" tested positive for the virus.

It's understood that, in line with advice from the Scottish Health Protection Service (SHPS), mass testing of the Bankhead Place factory's workforce is now being undertaken. However, there are currently no plans to halt production.

A Burton's spokesperson said: “We are in close liaison with all relevant regulatory agencies, including SHPS, and they are fully supportive of the action we are taking. Once the result of the mass testing is known, we will take whatever action is deemed to be appropriate.

“Production levels remain unaffected and we are of course monitoring the situation closely. There are currently no plans to suspend or reduce production.”

One concerned staff member told Edinburgh Live: "It's a shambles".

The factory was previously hit with a Covid outbreak last year, when four workers were said to have tested positive.
