Burst water pipe spurts 10m fountain over motorway

CHACHOENGSAO: A 10-metre fountain of water from a burst pipe dumped soil on the outbound Bangkok-Chon Buri motorway and caused a car to plunge off the road into a ditch on Friday morning, near the Bang Pakong rest area.

The eruption occurred around the 50 kilometre marker on Highway 7 in Bang Pakong district about 8.30am.

A woman driving past at the time was so startled she veered off the road, into the roadside ditch and the vehicle overturned. Fortunately, she was not injured and emerged safely. The upside down car later became awash with water.

The ruptured pipe reportedly belongs to the Royal Irrigation Department.

Workers sent to the scene closed a nearby valve and the fountain collapsed and stopped about 9am.

A section of the road was temporarily closed while it was cleaned of the wet soil, disrupting the traffic flow.

The overturned sedan  lies in the ditch, close to the breach in the pipe, as the water advances upon it, in Chachoengsao province on Friday morning.
