Burst water main damages businesses and leaves large hole in busy road

A burst water main caused damage to businesses and left a large hole on a busy road.

This was the scene on Long Street in Middleton after the burst.

United Utilities said it fixed the water main and is helping businesses clean up their premises after suffering water damage.

Pictures from the scene showed the hole is on one side of the street, near Middleton town centre.

Workmen created the hole to fix the burst.

A spokesperson for United Utilities said: "On Monday 11 January 2021 our engineers completed repairs to a burst water main on Long Street in Middleton, Rochdale.

"We are currently in the process of reinstating the road and assisting with the clean-up of some shop premises which suffered water damage as a result of the burst.

"We’re working as quickly as we can to get everything back to normal and apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Rochdale council confirmed there had been a burst water main, and said work to repair it is set to be completed by tomorrow.

Hunters estate agents on Long Street said it was left without water for a few hours on Monday but remains open.
