Burst water main closes East Kilbride primary school and nursery

A burst water main in East Kilbride this morning closed a primary school and nursery with widespread disruption to supply elsewhere.

Scottish Water confirmed a 12 inch main on Greenhills Road ruptured.

It is understood the burst was between Lickprivick and Stroud Roads with a stretch of Greenhills Road closed for a period.

And South Lanarkshire Council (SLC) said with no water for toilets in St Vincent's Primary and Ballerup Nursery, they were "in the process of closing".

Homes in the Gardenhall, Greenhills and Whitehills areas were affected but Scottish Water say the problem has now been isolated with repairs underway.

Greenhills Primary was also affected, with disruption to Rosaburn Care Home and nearby St Vincent de Paul's church.

Pictures on Facebook also show large amounts of water near to the primary school and care home - who said the water stopped "just in time" to prevent further disruption for residents.

SLC have confirmed there has been external flooding at St Vincent's Primary.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “Earlier today, a burst occurred on a 12 inch main at Greenhills roundabout in East Kilbride and caused an interruption to supply for some residents in the Gardenhall, Greenhills and Whitehills areas.

"The burst has been isolated and a repair is currently under way. We apologise for any inconvenience caused as a result and thank everyone affected for their patience and understanding.”

Lynn Sherry, Head of Education at South Lanarkshire Council, said: "The water from the burst main has affected Greenhills and St Vincent's Primary Schools and Ballerup Nursery.

"In particular, there has been external flooding at St Vincent's and the water supply to St Vincent's and Ballerup has stopped.

"We are working to address all issues, including delivering bottled water and additional hand sanitiser but, with no water for the toilets, St Vincent's and Ballerup are in the process of closing.

"We are in constant communication with Scottish Water, who are expecting the water supply to be reinstated within the next few hours."
