Burst water main causes flooding on major road in Gorton

A major Manchester road was flooded this morning after a water main burst.

Video footage showed water gushing down Hyde Road in Gorton and neighbouring Far Lane.

Residents in the area said their water had been turned off following the incident.

Councillor Julie Reid, who represents the ward, tweeted to say the incident had 'emptied Debdale Reservoir'.

She said 'thank god' no one was injured.

Hyde Road has been closed between Reddish Bridge and Thornwood Avenue.

Photos from the scene this morning showed engineers and firefighters wading through deep water.

Transport for Greater Manchester tweeted about the incident, saying the incident was 'due to a burst water main which is icing over'.

They said gritters were being used to get rid of the ice.

"We’ve been out to investigate and found this to be the cause for some of you having no water or just a trickle.

"Our leakage engineers are on site carrying out repairs.

"Our Water on Wheels tankers are in the area pumping into the network to keep your taps flowing whilst we complete the necessary repair work. "We’re sorry for the inconvenience and hope to have your taps flowing again very soon."

The incident came as a number of crashes were reported to police on roads across Greater Manchester.

Icy conditions caused collisions on the M61, the M66 and Mancunian Way.

In a tweet, GMP urged people to drive to the conditions.

The force wrote: "Please take care on the roads today and only travel if you need to.

"There have already been a number of collisions this morning due to adverse weather conditions across Greater Manchester.

"Thankfully no-one was seriously injured. Follow @OfficialTfGM for any travel updates."

United Utilities said in a statement: "A large water main has burst in Hyde Road which is causing some flooding and some customers were without water for a while.

"We are really sorry about this. Hopefully water supplies are now restored, although some people may still be experiencing poor pressure. Our water tankers are pumping directly into the mains at strategic points to support local supplies and get them back to normal.

"Our engineers have been on site since the burst happened earlier this morning and they are working hard to isolate the main as quickly as possible so we can start the repair.

"Our insurance team is also on its way to check whether the water has caused any localised flooding or damage to property. They will liaise direct with anyone who has been affected to make sure they get the help and support they need."
