Burst main leaves 'thousands' of Airdrie residents without water

A burst water main left "thousands" of Airdrie residents without water.

Hundreds of properties in Craigneuk, Petersburn, and other parts of the town suffered the loss of their water supply following the burst yesterday evening.

Scottish Water said engineers worked through the night in an attempt to resolve the emergency and that the "majority of customers" now had their water supply restored. Despite this, many customers now say they are experiencing discoloured water flowing through their taps.

A Scottish water spokesperson said: "Some properties in parts of Airdrie are experiencing a loss of normal water supply, low water pressure or discoloured water following a burst water main.

" Our engineers have been investigating this emergency issue and are working hard to locate the burst to allow repairs to be carried. In an attempt to minimise the impact of the burst on customers water supplies we are redirecting water from other areas to restore normal water supply. We are also using water tankers to feed additional water into the network for customers."

The national supplier said that anyone experiencing discoloured water should run the cold tap in their kitchen slowly until the water runs clear. A distribution point is also being organised for customers to collect bottled water.

The spokesperson added: "This will take some time to set up safely and we will update the locations as soon as we can. Scottish Water apologises for any inconvenience to customers and thanks them for their patience and understanding whilst we resolve this issue and restore normal supplies."

Airdrie MSP Neil Gray said he has been in constant dialogue with Scottish Water since last night and, along with constituency colleague, Anum Qaisar-Javed MP and Councillor Michael Coyle, has been working with Scottish Water to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.

He told Lanarkshire Live: "This is a major incident which has affected thousands of constituents and hundreds of households.

"I'd like to pay tribute to Scottish Water for its response to the problem and to the engineers who worked through the night. I have been receiving regular updates and like everyone else, I am keen that the situation is resolved as quickly as possible.

"I am also pleased they are taking on board my suggestion of setting up bottled water distribution points. This is something that needs to be actioned as quickly as possible too.

"We will keep constituents updated as best we can."
