Police are investigating possible links between a burnt-out car found yards from Rangers’ training ground and a potential gangland flare-up.
A Mercedes was discovered in a lane off Auchenhowie Road in Milngavie, near Glasgow, on Wednesday – just hours after claims that shots had been fired in the city’s Possilpark.
Police cordoned off the scene near the Mercedes while forensic checks were carried out.
Officers are probing whether the car could have been involved in an earlier reported clash, which came after a recent escalation in tensions between the notorious Daniel and Lyons gangs in the north of the city
Police rushed to a “disturbance” in Stronend Street in Possilpark and witnesses believe shots may have been fired.
Forensic officers combed the scene for clues and officers spoke to residents nearby about what they had seen and heard. One said: “There was a loud bang and some neighbours heard it, too. There has been lots of police here since Tuesday. Some of them were on the ground looking for something.”
The incident came after earlier attacks believed to be connected to the 20-year feud between the Lyons and Daniel drug gangs.
On March 29, a 27-year-old man was stabbed, suffering serious wounds. Police said hitmen fled the scene of the bloodbath in two cars – possibly a Volkswagen Golf and a dark-coloured saloon.
A week earlier, two cars linked to the Daniel clan – a £45,000 Audi Q5 and a £20,000 Volkswagen Golf – were firebombed in Milton.
Police said: “Inquiries are ongoing into both incidents. However, there is nothing to suggest a firearm was discharged in the area and we are unable to confirm if the incidents are linked.”
