Jhye Richardson and Cameron Gannon have ripped the heart of out Queensland's batting order to put Western Australia into a strong position in their Sheffield Shield clash at the Gabba.

The Bulls crashed to 6-167 at tea on day three in their second innings, a slender lead of 15 runs.

Richardson (4-21) removed Marnus Labuschagne (39) and Joe Burns (46) in the space of three overs shortly after lunch in an impressive spell.

He had Test No.3 Labuschagne caught behind fending a rising delivery, before finding the edge of Burns.

Against his former side, Gannon had Usman Khawaja caught at first slip for just eight, with the Ashes hopeful unable to back up a crucial 70 in the Bulls' first innings.

Gannon then got rid of Jimmy Peirson for a duck, as the Bulls lost 4-15 to fall to 5-106 after starting the session at 1-91 on the back of Burns and Labuschagne.

Richardson, who picked up three wickets on day one to help roll Queensland for 129, returned late in the session to end the rearguard action of Jack Wildermuth (34).

The 25-year-old made his Test debut at the same venue two years ago and has done his standing in the fast bowling pecking order no harm.

WA are a bowler down after left-arm quick Joel Paris injured his hamstring on day one.

The Bulls are battling without Michael Neser, who hasn't taken part in the match after straining his right hamstring on day one.

Queensland physio Martin Love said further scans would be conducted in coming days but he was confident Neser would be available for selection for the first Ashes Test on December 8.

WA made 281 in their first innings on Thursday on the back of young talent Josh Philippe's second first-class century and his highest career score.

WA veteran Shaun Marsh was forced to retire with a calf injury in the first innings but later returned to the crease with the assistance of a runner.
