Burns club in Coatbridge celebrate at anniversary dinner

THE brilliance of Burns was honoured in Coatbridge during a special showcase.

Whifflet Burns Club held their anniversary dinner in Drumpellier Golf Club – with dozens in attendance.

Members and guests once again turned out to honour the birth of the national Bard.

President Mitchell Gibb was in charge of the evening and presided over the top table.

Past-president Brian Martin got the night underway with his excellent address to the haggis, which was piped in by Andrew Park.

A “delicious meal”, including the traditional haggis, tatties and neeps, was then served by Graeme Anderson and his hard-working staff at the golf club.

Principal speaker Sandy Blair, a Robert Burns enthusiast from Larkhall, delivered “a very witty and informative” immortal memory which the guests thought was “first class”.

A Whifflet Burns Club spokesperson said: “Retired lawyer and past-president of two Burns clubs, Jim Lavery, entertained the audience with a very funny toast to the lassies.

“Eddie Gowther, vice-president, local businessman and amateur thespian, made the charity appeal on behalf of Alzheimer Scotland, which raised the fantastic sum of £820.

“David Gemmel recited Tam O’Shanter in his own inimitable style, much to the delight of the audience, and The Three Amigos had the company singing along with some of Burns’ best loved songs.”
