Burns celebrations prove to be a big hit at Rutherglen library

More than 100 local poetry lovers turned out at Rutherglen Library at the weekend to honour The Bard.

It was the third consecutive year of the Auld Rutherglen Facebook page’s Burns celebrations in the town’s library, organised by Geraldine Baird MBE.

They flocked to the library, which was decorated in flags and images of Robert Burns, to hear John Hutchison and Erin McQuillan sing and recite.

Demand was so great that the library ran out of seats.

Piper Captain David Beveridge piped Geraldine into the building with the ‘invisible haggis’.

She said: “He was awesome. We love pipe music. It just stirs the heart!

“The library staff were just marvellous. Manager Julie Smith and her team did us proud The library was breathtaking, festooned with flags and Burns images – it was wonderful. What a great place it is – a true community hub. The booklets were all run off for folk to sing along.”

Tea, coffee, sandwiches and sweet treats were supplied by Malcolm Macaskill.

And the whisky toast went down a treat, as did the sweets, crisps and biscuits laid out on the tables, provided by the library.

Norrie McNamee went along to represent the Auld Rutherglen Facebook page, which has nearly 11,500 followers from Rutherglen and all over the world.

"It is much loved and has been instrumental in reuniting family, friends and neighbours,” continued Geraldine.

“I was astonished at the turn out  on Saturday – over 100 people and  what an atmosphere they created,  all singing and clapping and just joining in.

“It was amazing, very special and we can’t wait until next year.

“It’s just another reason as to why I love the community in Rutherglen.”
