Burnley vs Sunderland LIVE: Premier League result, final score and reaction

Turf Moor, home of Burnley Football Club - (Getty Images)

Follow live coverage as Burnley face Sunderland today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Liverpool look to fend off competition from Arsenal, Manchester City and more.

The race for the Champions League places should also be a compelling battle, with a fifth place possible for English teams. Manchester United’s latest rebuild under Ruben Amorim sets expectations high once more after a dismal season last time out.

Meanwhile, it’s Burnley, Leeds United and Sunderland who made it back to the elite after promotion last year and each will have hope they can make it more than a one-year stay. Follow the latest live action from the Premier League below:

Burnley FC 2 - 0 Sunderland AFC

Burnley vs Sunderland

17:14

The full-time whistle blows to a chorus of cheers as Burnley defeat Sunderland 2-0 at Turf Moor. After a first half which lacked any real threat from both sides, it was the home side who took the lead early in the second half. An exquisite backheel by Anthony allowed Burnley captain Cullen to curl in a low 18-yard effort into the bottom-right corner. The Black Cats struggled to create a clear opportunity after the goal, and it was the Clarets who soon doubled their lead. This time, Cullen turned provider after playing a delightful through ball from his own half to Anthony, who skipped past Roefs before firing into the roof of the net. The result sees the hosts claim their first three points of the Premier League campaign, which sees them move up to 11th in the league table. For the Black Cats, they suffered their first defeat of the league this season and will be hoping the first-half injury to Ballard is not a serious one. Scott Parker's men were able to finish their chances in the second half and this was reflected through an xG of 0.96, whereas, Regis Le Bris' side finished the game with an xG of 0.67. Thank you for reading and take care!

We will have four minutes of additional time at the end of the first half.

Burnley vs Sunderland

15:28

This has been an entertaining start to the game. Sunderland were pressing for an early goal, but that opportunity for Foster has given impetus to the home side. Burnley's supporters are cheering their team on.

15:09

The game starts off well with Burnley dominating possession of the ball, which is recycled back to Dubravka, who gets booed by the visiting fans due to his allegiance with former club Newcastle.

Burnley vs Sunderland

15:04

After a one-minute applause for Burnley legend Willie Irvine, who passed away last month, we are underway for the first half at Turf Moor.

Burnley vs Sunderland

14:57

The teams are in the tunnel and kick-off will commence shortly in Lancashire. Burnley are unbeaten in their three Premier League home games against Sunderland (W2 D1), most recently a 4-1 victory in December 2016. Scott Parker will be hoping his side can claim the three points against today’s opponents.

Burnley vs Sunderland

14:36

Meanwhile, Regis Le Bris has made just one change to the side that dismantled West Ham 3-0 at the Stadium of Light last week. Omar Alderete comes into central defence, replacing Jenson Seelt, who is only fit enough for the bench. The former PSV defender picked up a back injury during the Black Cats victory over the Hammers. Granit Xhaka will captain the side once again after his reassuring performance against David Moyes’ men last week.

Burnley vs Sunderland

14:36

Scott Parker makes two changes to the side that lost 3-0 against Tottenham last week. Jacob Bruun Larsen and Lesley Ugochukwu come in for Josh Laurent and Oliver Sonne, with Ugochukwu making his first start for the home side since his move from Chelsea. Josh Cullen will start in midfield for the Clarets. No player created more chances on matchday one of this season’s Premier League than Cullen (five), his most ever in a league match for the club. It was the most by a Republic of Irishman in a Premier League game since Conor Hourihane created seven chances for Aston Villa vs Sheffield United in June 2020.

Burnley vs Sunderland

14:36

Meanwhile, the visitors are coming into this game after recording a stunning 3-0 victory over West Ham in last week’s Premier League fixture at the Stadium of Light. Goals from Eliezer Mayenda, Dan Ballard and Wilson Isidor had the Sunderland faithful rocking after eight years away from the top-flight. Regis Le Bris will be hoping for another victory today, although the Black Cats haven’t won their opening two matches in a top-flight season since 1980-81, while they last started with two clean sheets in 1976-77. More worryingly, Sunderland haven’t won any of their last 24 away Premier League matches in August or September (D12 L12) since a 1-0 victory against Bolton Wanderers in August 2009.

Burnley vs Sunderland

14:30

Hosts Burnley return to action after losing their opening Premier League fixture against Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The newly promoted side suffered a 3-0 defeat after goals from Richarlison (two) and Brennan Johnson. Even though one Premier League game has been played, there are warning signs for manager Scott Parker, who has seen his teams concede three or more goals in each of his last four Premier League matches.
