Burnley vs Liverpool LIVE: Premier League result, latest updates and reaction after late Salah winner

Burnley vs Liverpool LIVE

Mohamed Salah scored a 94th-minute winner from the penalty spot to ensure Liverpool maintained their 100 per cent start to the Premier League season. It looked like being a frustrating afternoon for the champions at Turf Moor as they struggled to break down a stubborn Burnley side. But Liverpool were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time following a handball from Hannibal Mejbri and Salah made no mistake from the spot to send the Reds back to the top of the table.

Liverpool were without Alexander Isak, the £125million summer signing who had been expected to make his Liverpool debut at Turf Moor but was left out of the squad. Slot explained his decision, as Isak builds up his fitness after missing pre-season and the first three games of the season for Newcastle having gone on strike to force his move to Anfield.

It was more heartbreak for Burnley, who pushed Manchester United close and were also unfortunate to lose 3-2 at Old Trafford in their last game. Follow the game LIVE below with our dedicated match blog.

Here come the two teams!

Slot explains Isak absence from Liverpool squad

13:47 , Giuseppe Muro

Arne Slot has explained his decision to leave Alexander Isak out of the Liverpool squad.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the game, Slot said: “As everybody knew, he did not have any team training at Newcastle, then went to the national team and only played there for 15-20 minutes.

“We think, with a week when we played three games in seven days, this is the best lead-up for him to be available against Atletico Madrid.”

Asked how long it will be before Isak is up to full speed, Slot said: “That is always difficult to say.

“What I can say is, in a pre-season after one or two weeks you play your first 45-60 minutes and you build that up gradually. But you do that with proper training sessions during the week. Now we hardly have any proper training sessions with the team because we play three games in seven days.

“Where would he be? Second or third week of pre-season I would say. So able to hopefully able to play during the week 45 minutes or more. But then two days later we play Everton. So it is going to be interesting for the performance staff, for us to get the best out of him from the start but also keep him available until the end.

“Another player that was not available for team training for a long time was [Yoane] Wissa, he got two 90-minute games and he is out for with an injury now for four weeks. That tells you how difficult the balance is with a player who has missed team sessions for such a long time.”

Scott Parker's record against Liverpool

13:20 , Arthur Ferridge

This will be Scott Parker’s first Premier League match against Liverpool since losing 9-0 with Bournemouth in August 2022.

But he has beaten Liverpool before, a 1-0 win in March 2021, and could become the second manager to beat both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot in the Premier League, along with Marco Silva.

13:08 , Arthur Ferridge

Liverpool have had to rely on their considerable attacking options to bail them out of a couple of situations this season and Arne Slot knows they remain key to their success.

The defending champions have won all three of their fixtures so far but required late goals against Bournemouth and Newcastle after twice conceding two-goal leads, which pointed to defensive frailties.

Against Burnley, he will again need those resources up front against a team they will find hard to break down.

Liverpool have scored eight goals, the most in the top flight, without actually creating that many clear-cut chances and Slot was asked how he hoped to improve that.

"To implement as best as possible the way we want to play," he said.

"But in the end the final third it is also the form of your wingers mainly because of their playing style you end up more on the sides.

"The better they are, the bigger threat they are, the more chances we will generate and then nine out of 10 times it is about scoring.

"If you can score an early goal that normally helps you in a game like that.

"There are a lot of factors going into a game like this but as always we are hoping that our attackers make the difference and that is what they have to do every single game."

No Isak!

12:55 , Arthur Ferridge

Alexander Isak’s absence is something of a surprise.

Slot said pre-match that he would have to build up gradually before being involved in a match, but it was expected that he would at least make the bench at Turf Moor.

He had played for Sweden in a 2-0 loss to Kosovo in the international break, making an 18-minute cameo in which he was booked and missed a brace of big chances.

Stats

12:40 , Giuseppe Muro

- Burnley have lost 14 of their 18 Premier League matches against Liverpool (W2 D2), including each of their last five in a row since a 1-0 win at Anfield in January 2021.

- Liverpool have won eight of their nine away Premier League matches at Turf Moor against Burnley (L1), winning the last six in a row.

- Liverpool are looking to win their opening four Premier League matches in a season for a third time, also doing so in 2018-19 (finished 2nd) and 2019-20 (won the title).

- Burnley have already shipped 37.5 per cent of their total league goals from 2024-25 (16) in the Premier League this season (6). If they concede two in this game, it’d be the joint earliest in Football League history a side had already conceded 50 per cent or more of their goal tally from the previous campaign.

Slot: Isak will have to ‘build-up gradually’ with Liverpool

12:08 , Giuseppe Muro

Arne Slot has tempered expectations surrounding Alexander Isak by suggesting he is unlikely hit the ground running after a disrupted pre-season.

The £125million deadline-day signing’s dispute with Newcastle over his entitlement to a move meant a late substitute appearance against Kosovo represented his first minutes of football since May.

Slot, who has said Isak was "maybe the best striker in the world", has asked for fans to be patient with him if the striker was taken off or not brought on until late on as he tries to get him up to speed.

"Don't expect him to be every single game 90 minutes on the pitch. That's definitely not going to happen for the next few weeks. He missed a proper pre-season," said the Dutchman.

"I think he missed three or four months of team sessions, so now we have to build him up gradually with us playing so many games and hardly any training time.

"That is going to be a challenge, but we have not just signed him for the upcoming two weeks, we have signed him for six years so this is what we have to keep in mind and what the fans have to keep in mind if I take him off in a certain moment or I only bring him in for a few moments. That is all for the fitness of the player."

Prediction

11:59 , Giuseppe Muro

Liverpool are the top scorers in the division this season, and that is without being able to call upon Isak so far. The good news for Burnley is the Swede is unlikely to be firing on all cylinders given his lack of game time.

The bad news for the hosts is the likes of Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo will be keen to get amongst the goals after being kept quiet by Arsenal last time out.

If Burnley can catch the Reds in a post-international break slump then a result is possible, but it’s hard to see past a comfortable win for the reigning Premier League champions.

Liverpool to win, 3-0.

Liverpool team news

11:52 , Giuseppe Muro

Alexander Isak is in line to make his Liverpool debut this afternoon.

The £125milion summer signing has trained with his new team-mates for the first time this week and is set to go straight into the squad at Turf Moor.

But Arne Slot has said he will not rush Isak into the team and the striker is likely to be on the bench, having not had a proper pre-season as he tried to force his move from Newcastle.

Jeremie Frimpong has returned to training after missing the last two matches with a hamstring injury and should feature, while Ibrahima Konate shrugged off a late scare against Arsenal to play two full games for France.
