Burnley vs Chelsea LIVE: Premier League result, latest updates and reaction after big win

LIVE: Burnley vs Chelsea - (Getty Images)

Burnley vs Chelsea LIVE

Premier League action resumed today as Chelsea beat Burnley in the first round of fixtures following the final international break of the year. The Blues arrived in Lancashire hoping to record a third straight league win and did so thanks to goals from Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez.

The result sees the Blues move to within striking distance of leaders Arsenal - who they face at Stamford Bridge next weekend - ahead of their north London derby showdown with Tottenham on Sunday afternoon. It is the perfect start to a hectic run of fixtures between now and the new year for Enzo Maresca’s side, with massive games against Barcelona and Arsenal to follow next week. However, Chelsea will again have to make do without starman Cole Palmer but suggestions are they have more than enough to cope.

The Clarets, meanwhile, have been beaten by London opposition in their last three outings and could end the weekend in the relegation zone. Follow Burnley vs Chelsea back below with Standard Sport's dedicated match blog, featuring expert analysis from Dom Smith at Turf Moor!

Chelsea player ratings

14:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Enzo Fernandez 7

Wasn’t quite the deep midfield link that Moises Caicedo is when he plays, but rotated play well and scored the second goal late on.

Andrey Santos 7

Really impressive in midfield as the Brazilian deputised for Caicedo with a mature and well-rounded performance.

Pedro Neto 8

Scored the decisive goal with a diving header round the back and was Chelsea’s best player and biggest threat. Picked up a stupid booking for not handing the ball back for a Burnley goal kick. Involved in the second goal too.

Dom Smith at Turf Moor

13:37 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

A concern that it's Reece James coming off at half-time for Badiashile. Chelsea fans will pray it's not another injury for the Blues' captain.

Benoit Badiashile coming on at half-time for Chelsea here.

As it stands

As we wait for the start of the second half, Chelsea are currently three points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal.

If Burnley concede two more, they will slip into the relegation zone.

It’s a fine header from Pedro Neto, but the cross from Jamie Gittens was superb!

Dom Smith at Turf Moor

13:20 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Chelsea head into the break with a slender lead that they have just about deserved, but Burnley have threatened and started the better team.

Not done yet, this, by any means.

HALF-TIME

13:19 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Burnley 0-1 Chelsea

Burnley 0-1 Chelsea

13:19 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

45+2 min: Chelsea win a corner right at the end of the first half as Cucurella is afforded a lot of space, he feeds Delap whose shot is deflected behind.

Dom Smith at Turf Moor

13:12 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

What an utterly stupid booking from Pedro Neto, who refuses to pass the ball back to Dubravka for a goal kick, dribbles it like a basketball player for a while, and then abandons it. Pathetic from the goalscorer. Deserved the yellow.

Burnley 0-1 Chelsea

13:11 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

40 min: Pedro Neto is booked for delaying the restart. Such a needless yellow card to pick up.

Dom Smith at Turf Moor

13:11 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Breakthrough for Chelsea at Turf Moor, and they had upped the ante in the last few minutes. And that assist for Jamie Gittens was his first ever Premier League goal contribution

GOAL! Burnley 0-1 Chelsea | Pedro Neto ‘37

Burnley 0-0 Chelsea

Blues youngster is quietly having a fine half.

Burnley 0-0 Chelsea

13:02 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

31 min: Chelsea put together a few passes in the attacking third, ball falls kindly for Chalobah who doesn’t pass up the opportunity to shoot - however, his effort lacks power and Dubravka makes an easy save.

Burnley 0-0 Chelsea

13:00 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

29 min: Tchaouna is set free down the right but his cross is cut out by Andrey Santos who once again puts a foot in at a crucial time.

At the other end, Delap is flagged for offside.

Dom Smith at Turf Moor

12:58 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Chelsea are finding Burnley awkward opponents so far, and the Blues are yet to get into a groove and find their rhythm. Still early days but they must play with more purpose and clarity.

Burnley 0-0 Chelsea

12:57 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

26 min: Esteve with a couple of important defensive actions in quick succession as Chelsea threaten. Burnley survive and win a free-kick in a very good position.

Burnley 0-0 Chelsea

12:54 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

24 min: It has been a promising start by Burnley.

Burnley 0-0 Chelsea

12:51 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

20 min: Slick passing move from Burnley down the left, Hartmann plays a reverse pass for Tchaouna who shoots first time but his effort is straight at Sanchez.

Burnley 0-0 Chelsea

12:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

19 min: Gittens does well to skip by Walker down the left, but the winger’s cross is very poor and the ball sails behind for a goal kick.

Burnley 0-0 Chelsea

12:48 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

17 min: Fernandez sweeps the ball out to Neto who cuts in and shoots...deflected behind for a corner which James takes but Dubravka punches the cross away.

Good goalkeeping that as the Burnley stopper was under all kinds of pressure.

Burnley 0-0 Chelsea

12:46 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

15 min: Ugochukwu wins a free-kick just near the centre circle after being caught late by Joao Pedro. However, Burnley can’t make full use of the set-piece.

Dom Smith at Turf Moor

12:44 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Delap starting to come into the game and is being used by Gittens, which is a positive sign. Chelsea started quite slowly here but look capable of hurting Burnley on the break.

Burnley 0-0 Chelsea

12:43 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

12 min: Tosin this time with a big block to deny Anthony after Burnley had sliced through the Chelsea defence. Runs from Tchaouna are causing the visitors problems.

Burnley 0-0 Chelsea

12:42 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

11 min: Another promising Burnley attack as Anthony is set clear down the middle but Andrey Santos tracks back and makes a fine block.

Burnley 0-0 Chelsea

12:40 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

9 min: Burnley give the ball away, Delap seizes on it and drives forward. Chelsea striker has options either side to him but elects to shoot and fires his effort over the bar.

Pedro Neto certainly not happy with the decision making there.

Burnley 0-0 Chelsea

12:38 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

7 min: Chelsea look to be in business as Fernandez sweeps the ball out to Gittens. The winger loses possession very cheaply and Chalobah is forced to make a fine block to stop Tchaouna’s effort from reaching Sanchez.

Good start to this.

Dom Smith at Turf Moor

12:35 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Strangest moment of the Premier League weekend has happened 180 seconds into it, as Robert Sanchez boots the ball out, but only as far as... Enzo Fernandez's head.

Burnley 0-0 Chelsea

12:35 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

4 min: James is alert at the back post to prevent a Burnley attack, Sanchez tries to get Chelsea going but throws the ball right at team-mate Enzo Fernandez and play is stopped.

Burnley 0-0 Chelsea

12:32 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

1 min: Scott Parker kept us guessing regarding Burnley’s team shape. It’s a back four to start with, meaning Kyle Walker will be up against Jamie Gittens.

Why is Caicedo on the bench?

12:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Enzo Maresca insists upcoming games against Barcelona and Arsenal have not factored into his decision to name Moises Caicedo on the Chelsea bench this afternoon.

He said: “The reason he is not in the first XI is that he came back Thursday night from Ecuador, from the national team, then just a light session with us yesterday, and the reason he is not playing is that it is impossible.

“To protect him a little bit.”

Fofana absence explained

12:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Enzo Maresca has revealed Wesley Fofana is not injured.

The Chelsea defender is not in the matchday squad this afternoon, but his absence is down to being protected more than anything.

Speaking to TNT Sports ahead of kick-off, Maresca said: "Just to manage him and protect him a little bit.

“He is playing, he is good and he is fit and we are very happy with that."

Chelsea have a good record away to Burnley and have more impressive form on the road this season than at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.

Opportunities handed to Andrey Santos and Jamie Gittens to impress, with Barcelona and Arsenal in Maresca’s mind no doubt when he selected the line-up.

Chelsea need a good performance today to go into those huge games full of confidence.

Chelsea have become less reliant on Cole Palmer

10:55 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Enzo Maresca was taken completely by surprise when opening his phone to a text at 11pm on Wednesday from one of the Chelsea club doctors revealing Cole Palmer’s domestic mishap and the ramifications, writes Dom Smith.

Yet news of Palmer’s setback and that his return to match action for Chelsea will now not come in any of the next three games against Burnley on Saturday or Barcelona or Arsenal is not quite as devastating a blow as it may have been earlier on in Maresca’s reign.

Enzo Maresca reveals anger at the Premier League

10:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Enzo Maresca is unhappy that the Premier League has scheduled Chelsea to play the 12:30pm kick-off immediately after the international break for the second successive month.

Chelsea face Burnley at Turf Moor in the early lunchtime match today.

A number of Blues players jetted across the globe on duty for their national teams, with Moises Caicedo returning back to London late on Thursday night following Ecuador’s 2-0 win over New Zealand in New Jersey in a game that finished at 3:30am GMT on Wednesday.

Chelsea were in the same situation as they faced Nottingham Forest at the City Ground in the same kick-off slot in mid-October.

Predicted Chelsea XI

10:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Both Enzo Fernandez and Pedro Neto missed international duty this month, with Argentina and Portugal respectively, but have since recovered from knee and groin injuries to be in contention.

Neto was pictured in Chelsea training at Cobham on Monday, as was Benoit Badiashile, who has recovered from a muscular problem sustained in the October win against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

Moises Caicedo only returned to London on Thursday evening following international duty with Ecuador but is fit to face Burnley. However, Enzo Maresca may wish to rest him ahead of key games against Barcelona and Arsenal over the next week.

Chelsea remain without longer-term injury absentees Cole Palmer, Dario Essugo, Romeo Lavia and Levi Colwill.

Predicted Chelsea XI (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; James, Fofana, Chalobah, Cucurella; Gusto, Santos; Neto, Fernandez, Garnacho; Joao Pedro.

Maresca reveals how discovered Palmer's freak accident

10:40 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

News of Cole Palmer’s freak toe fracture was communicated to Enzo Maresca in the form of an 11pm text from the club doctor, the Chelsea head coach has revealed.

Maresca has also revealed that the plan was for Palmer to return to training on Thursday but that was put on hold when the Englishman had an accident at his home the day before.

Palmer was on his way back from his reoccurring groin injury and Chelsea had one eye on the Barcelona game next Tuesday and the other on next Sunday’s league game against Arsenal as they plotted his return to match action following two months out.

But the Englishman suffered a freak setback on Wednesday when he stubbed his little toe on a door at his home and suffered a fracture, with Maresca ruling him out of Saturday’s trip to Burnley as well as both the Barcelona and Arsenal games.

Chelsea team news: No Palmer

10:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Chelsea will not have Cole Palmer back for the trip to Burnley due to a freak accident suffered at home.

The Blues’ talisman was close to a return from a persistent groin injury that has kept him out for two months but has now been ruled out of Chelsea’s next three games after fracturing the little toe on his left foot by stubbing it on a door.

Chelsea have received a triple boost before the clash with Burnley, though, with manager Enzo Maresca confirming that Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Neto and Benoit Badiashile are all available.
