Match report: Burnley 1-2 West Ham
Liz Byrnes braved the elements at Turf Moor to see West Ham come from behind to keep the heat on fourth-placed Chelsea. Here’s how she saw the action unfold ...
David Moyes speaks: “I thought the team played really well,” says West Ham’s manager. “We’ve won 2-1 but I thought we were worth a lot more than that. We had to ride a little bit of luck towards the end but overall we should have been out of sight going by the amount of opportunities we had to score.”
On his attacking line-up: “We have to go for it. I don’t know if we’re good enough to be in the top four, but while we’re around that area of the table, we have to try and challenge for it. I’d love to be in Europe; it would be an incredible achievement for us if we could do that. But we’re not that far away from the Champions League positions, so we’ve got to keep believing that we could fall into that fourth spot even if it take us until the last game of the season.”
Sean Dyche speaks: “It was a good game,” he tells Sky Sports. “It was played at a very good tempo, a very quick tempo. Both teams were going at it in search of different rewards: them chasing a Champions League spot, us making sure we’re trying to look after ourselves. I didn’t think we went far wrong with our level, I just think they were very good tonight. THey’re a good side, they’ve proved that all season and they had a little bit more edge in their attack and in transition.”
Ben Mee speaks: “We just didn’t quite do enough,” the Burnley skipper tells Sky Sports. “We were huffing and puffing a bit and it didn’t drop for us. Good start. We could have done better on both those crosses [for West Ham’s goals] - their front three caused us some problems. We came in full of confidence after Sunday [when they thrashed Wolves]. We were well up for this game.”
Antonio on his muted celebration: “I’ve had a couple of goals disallowed by VAR,” he says. “I thought I don’t want to be there doing a dance and the goal gets disallowed. I’ve toned down my celebrations. A couple of times I’ve been about to do one and a handball or whatever, VAR has killed it.”
On the possibility of West Ham qualifying for the Champions League: “It would be unbelievable. Everybody wants to play in the Champions League. I have been here a few years and there have been so many seasons we were fighting to stay in the league and now we have the opportunity for top four, it’s a dream come true. We will keep fighting, keep pushing.”
Michail Antonio speaks: “I am buzzing,” says the scorer of both West Ham goals in an interview with Sky Sports. “I am over the moon. It’s bit disappointing for me not to get the hat-trick but we are going to keep going and keep winning games. This is a tough place to come. It is one of those games you dread, it is so tough. But we managed to be resilient and get it done.”
Match recap: After 19 minutes of Bank Holiday dross, the match sparked into life when Chris Wood won and converted a penalty to give Burnley the lead and increase his own remarkable scoring record against West Ham.
Michail Antonio restored parity within two minutes, heading home a cross from the right, before putting Wet Ham ahead by roofing a cross from the left. He missed two decent chances to notch a hat-trick on his return from injury, while assorted team-mates also squandered chances.
Burnley had opportunities to rescue something from the game, with Ashley Barnes missing the pick of them after coming off the bench. West Ham were left hanging on for grim death at the finish, but leave Turf Moor with all three points.
What it means: West Ham go fifth, just three points behind Chelsea. Burnley stay in 16th place, not yet safe from relegation ... while looking quite safe from relegation as they sit nine points clear of the drop zone.

Full time: Burnley 1-2 West Ham
Peep! Peep! Peeeeeep! That’s a big win for West Ham, who played some scintillating football at times but wasted chance after chance to end up hanging on by the skin of their teeth.
90+4 min: Lingard and Fornals try to keep the ball in the corner but the latter is penalised for offisde.
90+3 min: Nick Pope came up for the corner but was unable to make an impact.
90+2 min: Another Burnley corner, Dawson taking the ball off Barnes’s toe before he can shoot. Soucek wins the header.
90 min: A West Ham breakaway ends with Jesse Lingard firing at Nick Pope from a tight angle. The ball goes out for a croenr, which Mee clears. We’ll have three minutes of added time and I would not be in the least bit surprised if West Ham concede an equaliser.
88 min: Craig Dawson puts a Charlie Taylor cross out for a corner. It’s squeaky bum time for West Ham. From the delivery, the ball is cleared as far as Ashley Westwood, whose shot is blocked. West Ham are riding their luck here.
87 min: Now Gudmondsson is booked for bundling over Vladimir Coufal.
86 min: Burnley substitution: Ashley Barnes on for Chris Wood, who has had a very quiet second half.
86 min: Craig Dawson is booked for time-wasting at the resultant free-kick.
84 min: Burnley enjoy a spell of possession which ends when Issa Diop heads a cross from the left clear. Ben Mee is booked for a tactical foul.
82 min: Fornals receives a pass from Antonio on the right side of the Burnley penalty area and cuts inside but is unable to steady himself to unleash a shot before Ben Mee hoves into view and blocks.
80 min: Pablo Fornals gets booked for going in studs up on Gudmondsson and I think he’s lucky not to get sent off for that. It was reckless.
79 min: West Ham substitute: Jarrod Bowen on for Said Benrahma, who was excellent ... even before he had his dinner two-thirds of the way through the first half.
78 min: Gudmondsson crosses from the left, trying to pick out Rodriguez. Craig Dawson intercepts and clears. Another great Moyes signing - he couldn’t get a game for Watford before he rocked up at West Ham.
76 min: West Ham press and probe hither and yon across the edge of the final third but are unable to find an opening on this occasion. It would beggar belief if they somehow contrived to drop points in this game but stranger things have happened.
Updated
75 min: Burnley substitution: Dwight McNeil off, Johann Berg Gudmondsson on.
73 min: Cresswell makes it 19. His low, diagonal drive from outside the penalty area flashes across the face of goal and a couple of yards wide of the far post.
72 min: Another chance goes begging for West Ham. After some crisp passing in the build-up, Benrahma plays the ball to Antonio’s feet in the penalty area. He looks a certainty to score but sends his shot fizzing the wrong side of the upright. That was West Ham’s 18th attempt on goal, if not on target.
70 min: With the rain pouring down at Turf Moor, Jay Rodriguez stretches to get his head to an Ashley Westwood corner at the far post. It’s a mite too high for him and the ball skims wide off the top of his head.
66 min: A bit of a wake-up call there for West Ham, who should have put this game to bed by now. Rodriguez snatched at his effort, putting it wide with the outside of his left boot, perhaps not realising he had more time to pick his spot than he thought.
Updated
64 min: That’s an astonishing miss from Jay Rodriguez, who shoots straight at Fabianski from close range, before firing the follow-up wide of a gaping goal. It was excellent goalkeeping from Fabianski, who saved first from Brownhill, then Rodriguez before watching on in amazement as the ball went wide from the substitute’s second attempt.
62 min: West Ham break on the counter and Jesse Lingard wins a corner off Matt Lowton. It’s taken short to creat an angle, but when the ball is eventually delivered to the forehead of Tomas Soucek on the edge of the Burnley penalty area, three different West Ham players, including him, are offside.
60 min: Burnley substitution: Jay Rodriguez on, Matej Vydra off.
Updated
56 min: From a West Ham corner, the ball is cleared as far as Benrahma just outside the Burnley penalty area. He volleys it not so much over the bar as into outer space.
55 min: Antonio misses a sitter! Teed up by Benrahma with a cross from inside the Burnley penalty area, he tries to side foot the ball home but hits it against the ankle of his standing leg. West Ham are battering Burnley in this second half but findiing that all important third goal difficult to come by.
Updated
54 min: Now Benrahma tries to pick out Lingard with a pull-back, but this time Ashley Westwood steps in to intercept.
53 min: Antonio picks out Lingard with a pull-back to the edge of the Burnley penalty area but he’s unable to find a half-yard to try a shot.
52 min: Said Benhrama tries a sepculative shot from distance but his diagonal effort is well wide of the far post.
Meanwhile in Sheffield: Mark Selby is just one frame from victory over Shaun Murphy in the World Snooker Championship. Daniel Harris has the latest ...
49 min: West Ham go close again, this time from a corner. The ball finds its way to Antonio at the far post, but he’s unable to control the high bounce.
47 min: West Ham gallop upfield on the counterwith Michail Antonio on the ball in the inside right channel. Benrahma is up in support and Antonio squares the ball, but the delivery is just behind his team-mate. With more precise passing, West Ham would almost certainly have extended their lead.
47 min: Charlie Taylor attempts to cross from the left and the ball goes out for a corner off Pablo Fornals. The ensuing inswinger is cleared at the far post.
Second half: Burnley 1-2 West Ham
46 min: Not normally renowned for his gung-ho attitude, David Moyes’s very attacking selection is paying dividends so far, despite the early scare visited upon them by their hosts. Can they hang on and go fifth? Burnley get the ball rolling and there are no changes in personnel on either side.
Half-time: Burnley 1-2 West Ham
Peep! Anthony Taylor draw the half to a close with West Ham leading by the odd goal of three. Chris Wood opened the scoring for Burnley after a fairly dull opening 19 minutes, only for Michail Antonio to equalise two minutes later. The West Ham striker fired his side into the lead just before the half-hour mark and the visitors are worthy leaders.
45+1 min: Ben Mee hoofs the ball clear but only as far as Tomas Soucek. He fouls Dwight McNeil and Burnley have a free-kick just inside their own half.
43 min: A half that was at times very bad and at other times quite excellent ticks towards it’s conclusion. Craig Dawson and Aaron Cresswell combine to clear a dangerous ball into their penalty area that was heading for an unmarked Wood.
41 min: Issa Diop clears a Charlie Taylor cross into the West Ham penalty area from the edge of the six-yard box.
39 min: Another chance for West Ham, as Soucek fires wide after being teed up by his compatriot Coufal. A job lot that came cheap as chips, what a tremendous pair of David Moyes signings they’ve been.
36 min: The sun having gone down, Said Benrahma, who went close again just before that Vydra chance, takes a quick break to go to the touchline and wolf down a couple of energy gels. A practicing Muslim, he is fasting for Ramadan, which means that will have been his first “meal” of the day.
34 min: Matej Vydra gets the better of Issa Diop, who is having a shocker. He lobs the bouncing ball over Lucasz Fabianski, but Craig Dawson heads his effort off the line.
32 min: Crikey! West Ham go close to making it three with a carbon copy of their second. Benrahma receives a pass on the left wing, cuts inside and curls the ball towards the far post. It goes narrowly wide, with Antonio not too far away from prodding it home. He stretched every sinew but couldn’t reach it.
31 min: This time the cross comes in from the left, Said Benrahma turning provider. Michail Antonio sticks out a leg and a milli-second the ball is resting in the back of the net.
GOAL! Burnley 1-2 West Ham (Antonio 29)
West Ham lead! I spoke too soon. A surprise returnee, Michail Antonio scores his second of the night.
Updated
26 min: After that brief flurry of goalscoring excitement, the players of both sides have reined in their baser instincts and started giving the ball away to each other again.
23 min: Jesse Lingard curls a lethargic effort straight into the arms of Nick Pope in the Burnley goal from the inside-left. He waves a hand by way of apology to Antonio, who he probably should have tried to pick out near the far post.
GOAL! Burnley 1-1 West Ham (Antonio 21)
West Ham are level! Michail Antonio gets between two defenders to head home from close range after getting on the end of a terrific Vladimir Coufal cross.
Updated
20 min: Tomas Soucek may have conceded the penalty there, but Issa Diop will have to shoulder some of the blame. His dithering allowed Wood to run on to a splendid Westwood ball over the top, Wood flicked the ball over his head from the byline and was immediately brought down by Soucek as he attempted to control his pass to himself.
GOAL! Burnley 1-0 West Ham (Wood 19pen)
Chris Wood smashes the ball home, curling the ball into the bottom left-hand corner having won the penalty after being fouled by Tomas Soucek.

PENALTY FOR BURNLEY
Hesitation from Issa Diop allows Chris Wood to run in behind on to a ball over the top by Ashley Westwood and moments later referee Anthony Taylor is pointing to the spot.
Updated
16 min: Chris Wood tries to advance towards the edge of the West Ham penalty area with the ball at his feet but runs into Craig Dawson, who relieves him of possession.
14 min: Not one for the purists, so far ... but it’s early doors. West Ham are marginally the better side but there’s very little in it.
11 min: West Ham get forward in numbers, but Michail Antonio fails to pick out a team-mate. Ben Mee fails to clear properly and the ball drops to Manuel Lanzini, who sends a shot looping over the bar.
10 min: At the other end of the pitch, Charlie Taylor sends a cross towards the far post from the left touchline. Chris Wood is lurking, waiting to pounce, but Lucasz Fabianski comes off his line, arm outstretched to make a crucial interception.
9 min: Aaron Cresswell curls a cross into the Burnley penalty area from the left flank. It’s cleared.
7 min: Michail Antonio takes possession of the ball, canters up the centre and shoots. His effort is horribly high and wide.
6 min: Aaron Cresswell takes a throw-in near the halfway line. The tension is palpable.
5 min: Ben Mee plays a long ball into space down the left touchline and Craig Dawson puts it out for a throw-in.
4 min: Nothing much of note to report in these early stages as both sides size each other up.
2 min: Lukasz Fabianski lumps the ball long to Jesse Lingard just inside the Burnley half but his first touch is poor and he puts it out for a throw-in.
Burnley v West Ham is go!
1 min: Referee Anthony Taylor gives the signal to begin and the ball is rolling at Turf Moor.
Not long now: The teams are out on the Turf Moor sward going through the last of the pre-match formalities. West Ham’s players wear black shirts, shorts and socks. Those of Burnley are in their – and indeed West Ham’s – customary colours of claret and light blue shirts, white shorts, and claret and blue socks.
Full-time: West Brom 1-1 Wolves
Premier League: Wolves edged their fierce rivals West Brom a little closer to the abyss after the sides shared the points at the end of an entertaining game at The Hawthorns. Fabio Silva put the visitors a goal up with a deflected fluke just before half-time, only for Mbaye Diagne to restore parity shortly after the hour with a firm header.
Those teams: Sean Dyche names an unchanged side to the one that beat Wolves, but West Ham boss David Moyes springs several surprises. Rumours that Michail Antonio and Aaron Cresswell would not be fit for tonight’s game appear to have been greatly exaggerated, while Manuel Lanzini, Said Benrahma and Craig Dawson also come into the side. Jarrod Bowen is a surprise omission, while Angelo Ogbonna, Mark Noble, Fabian Balbuena and Ryan Fredericks drop out.

Early team news
Robbie Brady and Kevin Long are the only two Burnley players sidelined by injury, with both suffering from calve-knack. Sean Dyche is unlikely to change the team that did so well against Wolves, which would mean another start on the bench for Ashley Barnes, following his reurn from injury. Chris Wood, who scored a hat-trick against Wolves, will lead the line and could add to his tally in three goals in three games against West Ham at Turf Moor.
West Ham are without Arthur Masuaku, Declan Rice and Aaron Cresswell, and this game seems to have come a few days too soon for Michail Anonio, who is long odds to make the bench. Despite rumours to the contrary, Jesse Lingard is expected to be fit for tonight’s game.
Premier League: Burnley v West Ham
Eight days after their impressive 4-0 victory over Wolves at Molineux, Burnley welcome West Ham to Turf Moor to wrap up the May Bank Holiday weekend round of fixtures.
Sean Dyche’s side are not yet mathematically safe from relegation and face a West Ham side still harbouring grandiose notions of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
A win tonight will take them up above Tottenham Hotspur into fifth place, three points behind Chelsea with four games of the season remaining. Kick-off is at the scurrilously late hour of 8.15pm but stay tuned in the meantime for team news and build-up.
