Match report: Burnley 0-0 West Brom

Premier League: Despite losing Semi Ajayi to a first half red card, West Brom wasted several chances to take all three points at Turf Moor.

European round-up

There were seismic shocks on the continent as Bayern Munich lost against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga, while Spanish league leaders Atletico Madrid were beaten by Levante.

Sam Allardyce speaks: “We are bitterly disappointed in the end result, we should have had the three points,” the West Brom manager tells ther BBC. “We had far greater opportunities to score than them, the goal was the only thing missing. It would have been the perfect performance with 10 men.

“It’s only the quality of our finishing - everyone else was great. We went right to the very end but couldn’t get that all important winner. We are getting better and better, we should have had three points last week as well, but life is much more difficult if you don’t score your chances. One more game has gone by and we should have had six points, not two.

“We have lost four massive points to get closer, that’s making life difficult as we are not catching up. That gap could get bigger by the end of the weekend, that’s the problem.”

Sean Dyche speaks: “We were miles off, miles off,” the Burnley manager tells BBC Sport. “We looked really flat, with no spark, we had no clarity to play. We are stretched to the limit and that has showed today. We do need players to get fit as that was unrecognisable.

“We were better against 11, we had a good chance early on but when they went to 10 we were just making unrecognisable mistakes constantly. We can’t let that continue, we have asked a lot of these players, we have had injuries galore and we have had to roll these players out.

“The Premier League have been kind and moved another game for us, they probably didn’t have to. It’s relentless. We have picked up five points this week, the players have put a lot in so we can’t change much. We are asking a lot of the group.

“West Brom played well, they worked hard, were frustrating and could have scored on the break. In the end I am pleased with a point.”

La Liga: In quite a turn-up for the books, Spanish league leaders Atletico Madrid have lost2-0 at home against Levante. They remain six points clear of their city rivals Real Madrid, with both sides having played 23 games.

League One: It’s finished Doncaster Rovers 3-3 Hull City after 40-year-old substitute James Coppinger scored with a free-kick in the 12th minute of injury time to equalise for Donny. Hull’s George Honeyman was stretchered off in a neck brace, in that one, hence the huge amount of added time. Here’s hoping it’s nothing too serious and we wish George all the best.

Thomas Tuchel speaks: “Clearly yes,” the Chelsea manager tells BT Sport, upon being asked if Chelsea missed an opportunity today. “We had enough chances and opportunities to win. Sometimes it’s like this in football, you concede one chance and they score.

“We were very, very good in the first 80 metres of the pitch but in the last 20 I was not happy. We were not decisive enough. We were not aggressive enough. We were not clinical enough ... to create more big chances where you cannot miss. Our decision-making was not good enough.

“We ended our own attacks ourselves with bad choices, with poor decisions ... with balls that werre over-hit or under-hit. Imissed the aggressiveness and determination in the box to finish this game early. We had a lot of opportunities but the last 20 metres was not good enough today.”

He goes on to say he did not take Tammy Abraham off because he was injured, and further adds that he was not happy with his replacement Callum Hudson-Odoi’s energy, attitude or counter-pressing “so we decided to take him off again”.

Premier League

After last night’s Wolves win over Leeds at Molineux, Southampton and Chelsea got the top flight ball rolling at Saint Mary’s this lunchtime, with the hosts hoping to avoid a sixth consecutive Premier League defeat and their visitors plotting to make it five on the spin. It’s half-time and the game is currently going the way of Southampton, who took the lead courtesy of a very tidy Takumi Minamino finish that was very much against the run of play. Chelsea have been dominant, but have created little or nothing in the way of goalscoring opportunities.
