Liverpool earned a last-gasp win over Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday thanks to a 95th-minute penalty from Mo Salah.
All of the pre-match talk had been about new Liverpool signing Alexander Isak missing out on the squad and for much of the game it looked a mistake as the Reds toiled at Turf Moor, with the first half coming and going without any notable chances as the hosts dug in deep.
Arne Slot‘s side came out with more tempo in the second half and continued their complete domination without managing to fashion many clear-cut chances, though they were given an advantage as Lesley Ugochukwu slid in late on Florian Wirtz to get himself a second booking.
The 10 men dug in deep over the last 10 minutes but they were denied a deserved point as Hannibal Mejbri reached out an arm to give the champions a late penalty.
And Salah duly stepped up to rifle into the back of the Burnley net and take the three points with pretty much the last kick of the game, as the defending champions retain their 100 per cent record in the 2025/26 campaign.

Slot on Isak omission: 'You make a choice for a good reason'
17:17 , Flo CliffordArne Slot also went into detail on BBC Match of the Day on the decision to leave Alexander Isak out of the squad for today: “You make a choice for a good reason, for a good argument. That choice was because he missed out for four months on team training.
“He's in his second or third week of pre-season. We have given him a proper week and then we think maybe he will get more than 10 or 15 minutes in our Wednesday game and that's the way to build him up. He needs proper playing time but also build him up so he has a good base.”
Earlier, he told Sky Sports: “Now he is ready to play at least 45 minutes. Let's see if we will use that on Wednesday or on Saturday.”
I was shocked with the added time - Arne Slot
17:10 , Flo CliffordArne Slot tells Sky Sports: “I settled really bad because after 90 minutes when I saw how much added time there was I was shocked. I was still shocked when we got the penalty because five minutes of added time for me was unbelievable. Shocked and then happy Mo scored the penalty.
“It wasn't a game we created a lot of chances, it is hard against a team who plays in their box. We kept playing, we kept moving the ball around. They got more and more tired which is normal when you have to defend for 80% of time and then we got as many attackers on as possible.
“Difficult game but all of them are in the Premier League. A clean sheet and from open play we hardly concede a chance. That's a good thing.
“It is normal and a lot of new players, we will get better and better but in the meantime we have 12 points.”
Liverpool top of the league
17:03 , Flo CliffordLiverpool end this weekend top of the Premier League table with 12 points, three points clear of Arsenal in second - that feels familiar.
Burnely are 17th, level on 3 points with 16th-placed Man City and 18th-placed West Ham, although City may pull clear this afternoon.
'My team epitomised spirit' - Scott Parker
16:56 , Flo CliffordMore from Scott Parker. “I've seen disappointments in my time and my career. At times we survived like our life depended on it today. We knew we had to give that.
“The overriding factor here is that everything we set about to be today I am immensely proud of the players. The game ends in a real heartbreaking way for us. It is what it is.
“We just fell a little bit short with the last-minute penalty.
“We needed to deny space, that was critical for us, and we did that. We defended very, very well. We didn't look much of a threat going forward but it is what it is. We are trying to get a result and we are trying to survive it is just a shame the way it ended.
“My team today epitomised spirit.”
'We will have to train with hands behind the back' - Scott Parker
16:49 , Flo CliffordScott Parker tries to strike an optimistic note, telling Sky Sports: “It is handball. In the law of it it is handball. We will have to change in the technique of defending things with hands behind the back. But really proud of the team.
“I have been in the arena, I know how quick things move. His body action was turning and his arm has gone out. The ball is probably coming at 80mph and it has hit it. The only learning for Hannibal is that we will have to train with hands behind the back.”

'Very unfortunate' - Burnley's Hjalmar Ekdal
16:42 , Flo CliffordNow for Burnley. Hjalmar Ekdal tells Sky Sports: “Of course it's a mistake and he knows it. We told him [Hannibal Mejbri] afterwards that it happens. It's very unfortunate.
“We did such a good game, keeping it tight and hoping to see the game through then this moment comes. Of course it's going to happen. It's so typical and not a nice moment.
“It's one mistake in the end. Last week it cost us and it's very unfortunate. We are doing a good game, following our game plan and we are a few seconds from one point. It just feels typical to concede those types of goal.
“We followed our game plan so well it became hard for them. We knew how to play and everyone was sticking to it. I think we have to be happy with the performance. Both last week and this week we are so close to getting a point.”
'Mo is world class' - Van Dijk
16:35 , Flo CliffordVirgil van Dijk is next to speak to Sky Sports. “We obviously try to break teams down. We had to be patient and had to be ready. We just kept looking for the goal and the opportunities. A well deserved win but if I am Burnley it is never nice to concede a penalty.
“At the end of the day it was a penalty and Mo scored it perfectly. He is a world class player and we know he can deliver in these moments.
“Key today was not to get frustrated. It could have been a draw as well but we take the three points and move on to Wednesday.”
'We don't give up' - Salah
16:28 , Flo CliffordLet’s hear from Salah, shall we. “Tough opponent today, we tried our best to get the ball between the lines. It was tough but I am glad we managed it.
“We have a few new players in the starting line up and it takes time to adapt to our game and we try our best to make them confident in our game.
“We don't give up. We try and push ourselves to the limit and as team we did that.”
Salah writes history once again
16:22 , Flo CliffordThat late penalty from Mohamed Salah has seen him become Liverpool’s record league scorer from the spot: his 35th converted penalty sees him move clear of Billy Liddell’s 34.
And he’s also moved clear of Andy Cole on the Premier League’s all-time scorers list, with one more on 188. Fourth overall - how much higher can he climb?

FULL-TIME! Burnley 0-1 Liverpool
16:04 , Chris WilsonWell, perhaps ‘undeserved’ for the visitors but the champions dominated the entire match, and you only need one moment at this level.
Burnley dug in deep but in the end were undone by a moment of stupidity, and that is the kind of thing that gets you relegated come May!

15:38 , Chris Wilson77 mins

Slot makes a change as Federico Chiesa replaces Ekitike.
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool

That does mean that the waves of Liverpool pressure are coming thick and fast though.
Some patient build-up from the visitors ends with Salah unable to divert Gakpo’s cross back across goal, though Liverpool recycle possession as the hosts continue to drop deeper and deeper.

The teams are back out at Turf Moor.
HALF-TIME! Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
15:00 , Chris WilsonA frustrating half for Liverpool against stubborn Burnley side, though the visitors have limited the Clarets to almost nothing in front of goal.
The first goal will of course be crucial, but if Liverpool can get it – as the run of play suggests they will – then they should be able to see out a fairly straightforward victory.
Burnley will be happy with what they’ve produced so far - with some excellent defending at points – although they’re really lacking that bit of quality in the final third, as are the visitors at times.

HALF-TIME! Burnley 0-0 Liverpool

The referee brings the first half to an end and it’s been a frustrating one for Liverpool, who have been limited to half-chances despite dominating the ball at Turf Moor.
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
14:49 , Chris Wilson45 +1 mins
Three minutes of added time here.
Lovely running from Gravenberch before Wirtz brings it down in the area and fizzes across a ball that narrowly escapes Ekitike.
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
14:47 , Chris Wilson44 mins
A few opportunities have failed to turn into a concrete chance for the visitors simply because of a lack of quality on the final ball, as happens just now as Salah is unable to complete the one-two.
It hasn’t happened for Liverpool in the first half, though we all know it only needs to click once.
Arne Slot will likely put it down to early season and lack of fluidity due to the international break.
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
14:43 , Chris Wilson41 mins
Lovely play from Ekitike as he gets in behind the defence on the wing. He skips past his man to drive into the box and fizzes a ball in between Dubravka and his defenders, but nobody had gambled and it goes out just past the far post.
Moments later, the visitors win a corner as Gakpo’s speculative effort is deflected behind.
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool

Burnley win a corner after some clever play from Tchaouna sees a cross eventually turned behind by van Dijk.
Hartman swings it in but the visitors deal with it and Salah finds himself alone on the counter, eventually hooking a cross out of play.
A somewhat surprising sub here too, as Milos Kerkez is replaced by Andy Robertson. The Hungarian was on a yellow card already and committed a foul just a few minutes ago.

Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
14:37 , Chris Wilson35 mins
Burnley get a brief rest as Kerkez brings down Anthony midway into the Liverpool half.
The hosts choose to launch it into the box but it ends with Ekdal unable to get his header on target or back across goal.
At the other end, Walker does very well to slide in and divert Kerkez’s cross for a corner.
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
14:35 , Chris Wilson33 mins
Better from Liverpool as Gakpo drives into the box and sees his cross punched back out to Wirtz, who in turn sees his shot blocked.
It rebounds to Szoboszlai on the edge of the box, and his shot defects behind for a corner.
Liverpool come again but Gakpo’s clipped ball in is cleared before Salah is penalised.
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
14:32 , Chris Wilson30 mins
Pretty clear what the Burnley attacking tactic is today, as Walker wins it deep into his own box and straight away looks for the long ball forward. Liverpool have this one covered easily enough though.
Burnley manage to launch another counter though and Foster leads it, driving into the box before eventually fouling van Dijk.
The Dutchman did well to shepherd Foster off the ball initially, and barely looked phased in truth.
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
14:29 , Chris Wilson27 mins
Almost a golden counter-attacking opportunity as Konate loses the ball to put Burnley 2-v-1, but the referee penalises the tackle on the Frenchman.
Liverpool come again but Salah loses it with a stray pass, though there are no options ahead of the Burnley players when they win the ball, so they end up losing it almost straight away.
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
14:26 , Chris Wilson24 mins
Scott Parker will be fairly happy with the opening exchanges here. Alhough Liverpool continue to grow into it, Burnley have limited them to half-chances so far as Dubravka collects another cross.
Wirtz picks up the loose ball and lays it to Gakpo on the edge of the box, but the shot is blocked again.
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
14:24 , Chris Wilson21 mins
Ekitike narrowly misses out on bringing the ball down right on the edge of the box in a central position, as home fans take a sharp intake of breath followed by a sigh of relief.
Moments later, Gravenberch beats his man and slips in Wirtz, who sees his shot blocked brilliantly on the slide.
And the attack ends with Kerkez booked for diving in the Burnley box. Ridiculous.
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
14:20 , Chris Wilson18 mins
Mac Allister is one of the few players in the Liverpool squad who hasn’t been fully fit at times this season, so it’s a worry when you see the ankle buckle like that.
He gets up and is walking gingerly but should be okay to carry on from the looks of things.
Liverpool back in possession as play resumes.

Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
14:18 , Chris Wilson16 mins
First yellow of the game as Ugochukwu wins the ball at first but follows through on the ankle of Mac Allister. Never a red anyway.
It’s cleared by VAR but the Argentina midfielder is still down and receiving treatment.
10 successful passes for Burnley so far, compared to 109 for the visitors. That tells you a lot.
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
14:16 , Chris Wilson14 mins
Good ‘keeping from Dubravka to get the corner clear eventually after Wirtz's teasing ball in. The visitors are beginning to put a little more pressure on now.
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
14:13 , Chris Wilson12 mins
Gakpo takes the corner this time and it’s a great delivery that is headed over by Konate from about three yards. It was a more difficult chance than it sounds though.
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
14:10 , Chris Wilson9 mins
Liverpool have their first meaningful shot as Wirtz’s corner is eventually hooked over by Kerkez.
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
14:09 , Chris Wilson7 mins
Plenty of possession for the visitors but no chances yet, as Salah is unable to control a ball on the edge of the box.
The hosts do fashion a half-chance though, as the pass is intercepted in midfield before Ugochukwu drives forward and lays it off to Anthony, who drives a shot over the bar.
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
14:06 , Chris Wilson4 mins
Half a chance for a counter for the hosts as Antony drives forward, but his through ball to Foster is mis-placed.
Liverpool come again but Gakpo cuts inside and blazes an effort well wide.
Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
14:05 , Chris Wilson2 mins
All Liverpool early on, as you might expect.
The first attempt at a meaningful attack ends with Gakpo unable to latch on to Mac Allister’s through ball, though the visitors win it back quickly from the goal kick.
KICK-OFF! Burnley 0-0 Liverpool
14:02 , Chris WilsonWe’re underway at Turf Moor!
Burnley v Liverpool live
13:55 , Chris WilsonBoth sides are in the tunnel at Turf Moor, so we’ll be underway after the usual pre-match pageantry.
Will Liverpool continue their perfect start this afternoon?
Match stats
13:50 , Chris WilsonBurnley have lost 14 of their 18 Premier League matches against Liverpool (W2 D2), including each of their last five in a row.
Liverpool have won eight of their nine away Premier League matches at Turf Moor against Burnley (losing one), winning the last six in a row.
Head-to-head
13:45 , Chris WilsonThese two sides have met a total of 128 times in the past, with the first meeting dating back to 1894.
Unsurprisingly, Liverpool have the better of the head-to-head record, winning 61 games to Burnley’s 38. 29 meetings have ended in draws.
The last time these clubs met was in the 2023/24 season, when the Reds won both meetings – 3-1 at home and 2-0 at Turf Moor.
Scott Parker up for the challenge as Burnley host Liverpool
13:40 , Jamie BraidwoodScott Parker says his Burnley side are undaunted by the prospect of welcoming champions Liverpool to Turf Moor.
Arne Slot's men make the short trip after a stellar start to the new campaign and the Clarets will go into the game as significant underdogs as they chase their second win of the season.
Parker said: "I don't think our season will be defined by games like this. But it's a challenge we want to embrace and that's what we'll do.
"These games are huge challenges, make no mistake. We're playing against arguably one of the best teams in the world. They're a very strong side.
"When the boys cross the line, the eyes won't lie. There will be an endeavour and bravery about this team, like there always is. That's a given for Burnley."

Match stats
13:30 , Chris WilsonLiverpool are looking to win their opening four Premier League matches in a season for a third time, also doing so in 2018/19 (finished 2nd) and 2019/20 (won the title). It would be the third time in a row the reigning top-flight champions have won their first four games (also Man City in 2023/24 and 2024/25).
Arne Slot reveals Liverpool stance on Marc Guehi pursuit: ‘We were in for him’
13:20 , Jamie BraidwoodArne Slot has spoken out following Liverpool’s collapsed deadline day move for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.
"Richard's (Hughes) ownership, everyone worked so hard to get the deal done,” Slot said at his pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend’s trip to Burnley.
“It would be ridiculous if I would deny we were close to signing him, it was out in the open. It’s happened to our players in the past, they thought they were close to signing somewhere else.
“We would have liked to sign him, we were in for him. If we think we could strengthen the team, we never hesitate and that's what we try to do.”

Team news
13:08 , Chris WilsonArne Slot has made no changes to the side that beat Arsenal last time out, with the big news being that Alexander Isak is not even in the squad at Turf Moor.
Isak arrived on transfer deadline day and played for Sweden over the international break, but it seems Slot has chosen to rest the striker after a lack of club football this season.
Perhaps a better decision to ease him in, with today’s fixture expected to be a fairly straightforward one for the Reds.
Dominik Szoboszlai starts at right-back once again, though Jeremie Frimpong has returned from injury to make the bench.
Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister play in midfield, with the ‘usual’ attacking trio of Mo Salah, Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo playing behind Hugo Ekitike.
Team news
13:00 , Chris WilsonBurnley boss Scott Parker makes just two changes to the side who lost 3-2 at Old Trafford before the international break.
Both changes are in attack too, as Jacob Bruun Larsen makes way for Loum Tchaouna and Hannibal is replaced by Josh Laurent.

Burnley v Liverpool team news and line-ups
12:40 , Jamie Braidwood.... will be confirmed in the next few minutes. Will we see a debut for Alexander Isak? Or will it have to come from the bench?
Match stats
12:30 , Chris WilsonLiverpool have scored in 37 consecutive Premier League matches, which is their longest run in top-flight history.
Only Tottenham (39 in a row between March 2023 and March 2024) and Arsenal (55 between May 2001 and November 2002) have scored in more Premier League matches in a row.
Arne Slot explains why Liverpool broke transfer record for Alexander Isak
12:20 , Jamie Braidwood“Many reasons, but one that maybe stands out for me is that he has already shown this in the Premier League.
“We know that if he stays fit, he will be able to score goals for us. What he adds as well is enormous pace and he can score with both feet, with his head.”
Arne Slot on why Liverpool need to patient with Isak
12:00 , Jamie BraidwoodWhen Arne Slot was asked if Alexander Isak is the game’s outstanding centre-forward now, he qualified his answer.
“One of them,” he said. “At this moment in time, he isn’t, for the simple reason he has been out for four months. If you write I said he is not the best in the world, you have to add that [bit] or it is not completely fair because he is one of the best in the world.
“But for him to become the best in the world, the best players in the world win trophies and that is what he and we need to do for him, or someone else, to be seen as the best or one of the best.”
Hugo Ekitike gives honest verdict on record Liverpool signing Alexander Isak
11:40 , Jamie BraidwoodHugo Ekitike is raring to embrace the challenge of new Liverpool signing Alexander Isak but admits the striker’s arrival could pose a “problem” for someone at the club.
"When you play for the best teams, you inevitably expect to be competing with the best players," Ekitike said.
"Isak is a player I used to watch, so seeing him arrive is a pleasure.
"It's going to be tough competition, but I'm going to work hard to be good and perform well so that it's just the coach's problem.”
Alexander Isak plays first minutes of season following Liverpool transfer saga
11:20 , Jamie BraidwoodAlexander Isak played his first minutes of the season following his drawn-out transfer saga that dominated the summer.
Isak, who went on strike at Newcastle in order to force his £125m deadline day move to Liverpool, came off the bench for Sweden in the 72nd minute of Monday’s World Cup qualifier against Kosovo.
The 25-year-old sharpshooter couldn’t salvage a result for his nation, however, with Sweden suffering a shock 2-0 defeat thanks to first-half goals from Elvis Rexhbecaj and Vedat Muriqi.

Alexander Isak will have to ‘build up gradually’ with Liverpool – Arne Slot
10:40 , Jamie BraidwoodLiverpool head coach Arne Slot has tempered expectations surrounding Alexander Isak by suggesting the British-record signing is unlikely hit the ground running after a disrupted pre-season.
“Don’t expect him to be every single game 90 minutes on the pitch. That’s definitely not going to happen for the next few weeks. He missed a proper pre-season,” Slot said.
