Burnley set for Premier League fixture pile-up after fourth postponement in a month

Burnley are set to face a major fixture pile-up between now and the end of the Premier League season after it was confirmed that their game against Leicester City has been postponed.

Sean Dyche's men were scheduled to face the Foxes at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon, but the match has been called off following a meeting with the Premier League board.

This is the fourth Burnley game to be postponed since December 15 and they could be in line for a hectic schedule heading into the second half of the campaign.

Although the Clarets are out of the FA Cup, Dyche's side now have four matches to rearrange, which include a trip to Aston Villa and home games against Everton, Leicester and Tottenham Hotspur.

However, the postponement has also put their pivotal clash with Watford on Tuesday evening in doubt and they could yet have another fixture to fit in.

At the moment, Newcastle United have played two more matches than Burnley but sit on the same amount of points inside the relegation zone.

Eddie Howe's side, though, can leapfrog the Clarets with a win over Watford at St James' Park this weekend which would take them out of the bottom three in the meantime.

In comparison, Manchester City, Chelsea and West Ham United have played 21 games, while Burnley have fulfilled the fewest amount of fixtures with 17.

Nevertheless, Burnley's latest postponement is the 19th Premier League fixture to be called off due to Covid-19 this season and it's the first to be cancelled ahead of Gameweek 22.

In a statement, the Premier League said: "The Premier League Board accepted Burnley’s application as the club does not have the required number of players available for the match (13 outfield players and one goalkeeper), due to COVID-19 cases and injuries.

"The Board was able to make its decision in advance of the fixture to give clarity to the affected clubs and their fans.

"We apologise for the inconvenience and disruption caused to supporters who planned on attending the game, and we are aware that postponements will disappoint fans."
