Burnley linked with £10m Chris Wood replacement from Crystal Palace in January transfer window

Burnley are said to be interested in signing Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke to replace the outgoing Chris Wood.

The Clarets were forced into selling Wood to relegation rivals Newcastle United after the Magpies activated a £25million release clause for the striker this month.

The transfer has left Sean Dyche with a gaping hole in his squad which he is said to want to fill with a player who has Premier League experience.

According to the Sun, Benteke is one of several names being considered by the North East club to replace Wood, who scored 49 league goals in 144 top-flight games for Burnley in five years.

Belgium international Benteke scored twice against the Clarets at Turf Moor back in November in a 3-3 draw, though that was the last time the 31-year-old found the net for the Eagles.

He is currently competing for a place in the Palace starting XI with summer signing Odsonne Edouard and on-loan French forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, who has two goals in his last five outings for the club.

If Palace entertain the offer it could leave the door open - just - for another move for Arsenal's Eddie Nketiah. The Eagles were said to have entered talks with the Gunners earlier in the window for a deal for the 22-year-old but that now seems an unlikely option, with Mikel Arteta declaring the striker would not leave the Emirates this month.

Burnley are also said to be interested in a deal to sign Benteke's compatriot Divock Origi from Liverpool.
