Burnley expert gives verdict on Bristol Rovers' latest signing Ali Koiki

Ali Koiki made his Bristol Rovers debut on Tuesday evening, but he had little chance to make an impression as a second-half substitute in the 2-0 defeat to Peterborough United.

However, Lancashire Live's Burnley reporter Alex James believes the 21-year-old has the tools to forge an "excellent career" in the EFL.

Koiki, a versatile left-sided player, joined Rovers as a free agent after the October 16 transfer deadline following his departure from Turf Moor.

He was offered a deal to stay, but first-team football was what he wanted and after negotiations with Charlton Athletic broke down Koiki signed for Ben Garner's Gas.

Bristol Live asked Alex what Gasheads can expect from Koiki.

Ali Koiki was offered a contract to stay at Burnley this summer. How highly rated was he at Turf Moor?

He was very well thought of at the Turf Moor Academy and starred for the U23s last season but ultimately he wasn't expected to become part of the first team squad under Sean Dyche.

The decision to offer him a contract would have been with one eye on ensuring the Clarets recouped a fee for the player.

Had he stayed then a loan move away for experience would have been the likely route. Koiki has proved he is a level above Development Football and to his credit wanted to pursue a first team chance of his own

Why did he and the club fail to come to an agreement on a new deal?

As touched upon, it is the player's desire to play first team football that is the real drive here. Koiki had a taste of it on loan at Swindon Town 18 months ago and the Robins were keen on a return for him at the start of last season but a deal couldn't be done.

Koiki had not played a senior game for Burnley and the feeling among first team staff was that he wouldn't breakthrough so he looked for a chance of regular football elsewhere

Ben Garner believes Koiki can play anywhere on the left flank for Rovers, but what do you believe is his best position?

He can play anywhere on the left, having played left back and left midfield in the Academy at Burnley. Personally I think left wing back would suit him down to the ground. He has a nose for a goal, is a willing runner, can cross and is a competent defender.

At 21, do you believe he is ready to make an impact at League One level?

It will be tough for him simply because he is coming from Development Football. He certainly has the capabilities to feature in the third tier but it might be that a little bit of patience is required as he adjusts.

I have no doubt he will have an excellent career in the Football League though.

Are there any areas of his game where you think he needs to improve?

I'm sure his all round game will need to improve to make the jump to first team football but it is a case of raising his level a couple of per cent rather than working on one key area. As with all young players consistency will be key.
