Burnley defender Phil Bardsley sends message to Manchester United ahead of huge fixture

Burnley defender Phil Bardsley says he hopes former club Manchester United win the Premier League this season.

Bardsley's side take on United on Tuesday night and avoidance of defeat for the Reds will see them move to the top of the table, ahead of champions Liverpool.

United go to Anfield five days after their trip to Turf Moor and Bardsley will be supporting his old team in that game, if not during their next fixture.

"It's good to see them back up there and challenging for titles and competing for silverware," the 35-year-old told the Burnley Express.

"It's nice to see United back in the title race and I hope they do go on to win it."

Four wins in their previous eight league matches have helped Burnley pull away from the relegation zone - they are now 16th and five points clear of the bottom three.

United, meanwhile, are unbeaten in 10 league games, winning eight and drawing two.

Bardsley added: "It's fascinating this year - it's wide open - but hopefully they won't do anything against us and we can upset the apple-cart a little bit.

"I think United's form has been really good, Manchester City are coming into good form, Liverpool are outstanding, and then there's Chelsea and Tottenham.

"It'll be nice to see some old faces, but hopefully we can turn them over."
