Burnley boosted by striker's return from injury ahead of clash with Newcastle United

Burnley will be boosted by the return of Chris Wood for the trip to face Newcastle United this weekend.

The New Zealand international limped off in the win at Southampton two weeks ago with a hamstring complaint.

Matej Vydra has stepped up in his absence and netted twice in two games, quickly forging an impressive partnership with Jay Rodriguez.

But in his pre-match press conference on Thursday, Burnley boss Sean Dyche confirmed the former Leeds striker is "in contention" to face the Magpies.

However, the Clarets remain without Ashley Barnes and Matt Lowton for St James' Park clash, while Johann Berg Gudmundsson will also not feature after picking up a knock.

Speaking to sister title Lancashire Live, Dyche said: "Ashley is making progress but is now with us just yet.

"Woody has trained with us the last couple of days so he is looking good. He is in contention.

"Johann has a little niggle and we will monitor that one."

Wood's goal settled the reverse fixture at Turf Moor in December, and Burnley will be looking to continue their recent impressive form and complete the double over the Magpies.
