Burnley 1 Liverpool 3: Jurgen Klopp's selection gamble pays off as Reds come from behind to win

A much-changed Liverpool side came from behind to beat Burnley at Turf Moor and keep the pressure on Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Jurgen Klopp opted to make seven changes to the side that beat Everton on Sunday with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all left out of the starting XI.

But despite falling behind through Jack Cork’s close range effort, James Milner and Firmino, introduced off the bench in the second-half, produced the perfect response for the visitors.

Xherdan Shaqiri slotted a third home late on the counter attack to kill off any lingering hopes of a Burnley come back.

Klopp might be left to regret not including Joe Gomez in that pack of rested first-team players with the England international forced off after 23 minutes.

Gomez clattered into the advertising boards at Turf Moor after chasing down a pass but was forced off on a stretcher with Trent Alexander-Arnold onto replace him.

Liverpool’s changed front three of Shaqiri, Divock Origi and Daniel Strurridge failed to carve any real openings in the first 45 with the Clarets punishing the visitors nine minutes into the second-half.

While Alisson was able to impressively keep out Chris Wood’s flicked effort from a corner kick, Ashley Barnes was first to the second ball, moving it to Cork to turn home from close range.

Liverpool’s resolve was put to the test but they found the perfect response eight minutes later with James Milner curling a low effort home after Origi’s layoff.

While Liverpool’s front three may have lacked real guile on the night, Virgil van Dijk was able to supply it for their second.

Latching onto Alexander-Arnold’s free-kick, the Dutchman improvised brilliantly to turn the ball back across goal for Firmino to tap into an empty net.

Alisson turned provider to create their late third, freeing Salah to assist Shaqiri for his cool finish minutes from time.
