Liverpool continued their 100% start to the new Premier League season with a comfortable 3-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s deflected cross opened the scoring midway through the first half, and was quickly followed by Sadio Mane’s cool finish, before Roberto Firmino's 50th goal for the club made the points safe late on.
Jurgen Klopp stuck with the same XI that had started the win over Arsenal, with Joel Matip continuing to partner the newly-crowned Uefa Player of the Year Virgil Van Dijk at centre-back.
The Dutchman’s first act was to get turned by Wood, who forced Adrian into a decent low stop, but it was the visitors who almost went ahead inside five minutes when Mohamed Salah rattled the woodwork with a clever disguised effort.
Salah went close again when Nick Pope’s sprawling save at his feet ended up deflecting the ball back onto his shin and wide, but when the opener did arrive there was more than a hint of good fortune about it as Alexander-Arnold’s deep cross took a huge deflection off Wood and found its way into the far corner.
A horrible pass from Ben Mee, straight to Firmino, then gifted Liverpool possession and the error was ruthlessly punished as the Brazilian fed Mane to double the lead before half-time.
With his side going through the motions a little at the start of the second period, Jurgen Klopp looked increasingly agitated, and sent on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, in the week that he was recalled to the England squad by Gareth Southgate.
He tested Pope with a stinging effort on the counter attack, but it was Firmino who finally made the points safe ten minutes from time when he lashed into the bottom corner to send Liverpool back to the top of the table after a 13th league win in a row
