Burnley 0-3 Liverpool FC: Reds on verge of Champions League qualification with top-four finish in their hands

Liverpool won 3-0 at Burnley to climb into the Premier League top four with one game of the season left to play.

Champions League qualification had looked beyond Liverpool for long stretches of the campaign following a disastrous title defence, but Jurgen Klopp's Reds have rallied during the run-in.

Chelsea's 2-1 win over Leicester City on Tuesday left the champions with the chance to leapfrog the Foxes on goal difference with victory at Turf Moor on Wednesday night - and goals from Roberto Firmino, Nat Phillips and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain did the job.

The win means Liverpool sit level on points with Leicester but boast a superior goal difference of +24 to +20.

That means when Liverpool host Crystal Palace and Leicester take on Tottenham on the final day, the champions only need to match the Foxes’ result to ensure Champions League football next season.

Both sides had chances in an open first half, but Liverpool's quality in the final third told as Firmino finished an Andy Robertson cut-back five minutes before the interval.

Burnley started the second half well, but Nat Phillips rose highest to head home a deflected cross after the break.

Phillips was also needed at the other end as he headed a Burnley chance off his own line to preserve Liverpool's lead - and their nerves - with Oxlade-Chamberlain’s late strike adding another valuable +1 to the goal difference.
