Burnley 0-1 Tottenham: Lucas Moura strike sends Spurs into Carabao Cup quarter-finals but solves little else

Tottenham achieved the minimum requirement and qualified for the next round of the Carabao Cup, beating Burnley 1-0.

Wednesday’s performance was not a huge step up from what Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have delivered of late yet Lucas Moura’s second-half header was enough to seal their quarter-final spot.

Much of the match befitted both sides’ lack of form and the opening hour produced no shots on target. Harry Kane fired wide early on and got underneath a difficult high chance moments before the break.

In between, Spurs held possession comfortably but had little answer to the hosts’ sturdy backline. Moura, on for Bryan Gil following an injury after 25 minutes, smartly dribbled into a dangerous area only to miss Kane’s run and roll his pass right at a defender.

The second period saw the visitors perk up a touch, Giovani Lo Celso forcing Nick Pope into a reflex save for the game’s first shot on target after the hour mark.

Away fans were becoming agitated however and chanted for Nuno to ‘make a sub’ having waited 84 minutes for a change at West Ham. The manager duly sent on Son Heung-min and Tanguy Ndombele.

But it was his enforced substitute, Moura, who headed home the opener after a cross from the impressive Emerson Royal.
