Burnley 0-0 Arsenal: Gunners held as poor form continues - 5 talking points

Arsenal struggled to a goalless draw at Burnley as their stuttering form under Mikel Arteta continued.

The Gunners have won only one of their last five games under the Spaniard and could have left Turf Moor with nothing after Burnley's impressive second-half performance.

The Gunners' front three failed to spark to life in front of goal while Jay Rodriguez should have won it for the hosts when he clattered the bar from two yards out.

As a result, Arsenal remain in 10th, 10 points behind the final Champions League spot currently occupied by Chelsea.

Here are our talking points from Turf Moor...

1. What to do with Lacazette?

Mikel Arteta opted for a front three of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Gabriel Martinelli and while none found the back of the net, it is Lacazette who is causing most concern.

The Frenchman has scored just six goals this season, four fewer than Martintelli and only one more than Nicolas Pepe who has played a bit-part role since his move last summer.

As the centre striker of the front three this afternoon, Arteta would be right to have expected more from his frontman, although he showed no inclination to haul him off.

2. Saka injury blow

Arsenal have suffered more than their fair share of injuries at the back this season and Bukayo Saka became the latest victim as he hobbled off at half-time.

Granit Xhaka slotted in as a make-shift full-back but he won't be there next weekend as Burnley were able to exploit his uncertainty with Ben Mee almost taking advantage with the defender inches away from connecting with a fizzing cross from the right.

3. Burnley left to rue missed chances

The Clarets have now gone a dozen games without victory over Arsenal but this was their first point against the Gunners in more than a decade - and it could have been more.

Jay Rodriguez looked set to fire his side in front with 12 minutes remaining but his shot from two yards out hit the bar and dropped agonisingly down on to the line.

Victory here would have seen them leapfrog their opponents - you'd have been given long odds on that at the start of the season.

4. Focus on Europa League

Arteta won't admit it but he might as well forget about the league campaign this season. Arsenal are languishing in 10th in the table, 10 points behind the fourth and final Champions League spot.

We can't imagine anyone at the Emirates wants another Europa League campaign and so winning the competition should be the priority.

With Olympiacos up next in the first knockout stage, the stage is set for another run to the final.

5. Pepe problem

If Arteta doesn't trust Pepe enough to bring him on at 0-0 at Burnley, when will he?

The Arsenal boss made three changes (including one enforced) but brought on Joe Willock and Eddie Nketiah as he chased all three points, leaving Pepe on the bench.

The Ivorian looked to have forced his way into Arteta's plans with a fine performance against Manchester United but, like Arsenal's season, he has flattered to deceive.
