Burning Man is at the centre of a homicide investigation after a man was found dead, “lying in a pool of blood”, at the annual Black Rock City Desert festival.
On August 30 at about 9.14pm (local time), a Pershing County Sheriff’s Office Deputy was alerted by a festival goer about a man “lying in a pool of blood”.
According to the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office, the discovery was made when the ‘Man’ — a large wooden human-like sculpture that’s placed in the middle of the festival — was set alight.
“Pershing County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) Deputies and Bureau Land Management (BLM) Rangers immediately responded to the campsite and found a single white adult male lying on the ground, obviously deceased,” authorities said in a statement.

Shortly after the body was found, authorities, alongside BLM Rangers and Burning Man Black Rock Rangers, created a perimeter around the area and began investigating the scene, including interviewing “several participants in the immediate area”.
At the time of writing, the identity of the deceased is unknown, and the body has since been transported to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Per NBC News, Burning Man has said it was cooperating with authorities in their investigations.
“If you are in Black Rock City, do not interfere with law enforcement activity,” the festival said, per the publication.
“The safety and well-being of our community are paramount.”
Police have urged festival-goers to remain vigilant, despite saying that they believe the incident appears to be a “singular crime”.
The news comes days after a woman unexpectedly gave birth at the festival in an RV. On August 27, Kayla Thompson, 36, who showed no signs of pregnancy, went into labour while attending the festival, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The aunt of the infant has since opened up a GoFundMe to help the new family.
At the time of writing, the page has accumulated USD$13,449 (AUD$20541.45) in donations.
