Rescue crews raced to the aid of a man stuck up to his knees in soft mud on Burnham-on-Sea beach. Burnham Area Rescue Boat (BARB) was alerted by the coastguard at 3.42pm yesterday (Sunday, June 12) to reports of a man stuck by the pavilion - with an incoming tide.
Due to the state of the tide, fire crews were also called to the scene. Two firefighters boarded the hovercraft and went to the aid of the man who was pulled from the mud and taken to safety, reports Somerset Live.
A spokesman for BARB said: “Our volunteers were called out by HM Coastguard at 3.42pm to reports of a person stuck in knee-deep mud on Burnham beach near the pavilion. As the person was fully stuck in a large area of mud and very soft sand with a rapidly oncoming tide nearby, Burnham Coastguards also decided to call in additional help from the fire service."

The spokesman added: "BARB’s hovercraft flew two of the fire crew out to the casualty. The man was freed from the mud and then flown on the hovercraft up the beach to safety.
“Given the state of the tide, a quick rescue was needed and this was a good multi-agency incident with team working for a positive outcome.” Anyone who spots someone in trouble along the coast should call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
