Burnham-on-Sea named among UK's worst beaches - as voted for by tourists

A West Country beach located on the Bristol Channel has been voted one of the worst resorts in the UK, according to a new consumer poll.

The North Somerset beach town beat out only two other places in the poll of 118 coastal locations that was conducted by Which? The survey, which rates all of the places for its beaches, seafront, accommodation, peace and quiet, scenery and value for money, scored just 49 per cent.

Clacton-on-Sea in Essex and Skegness in Lincolnshire were the two places rated lower than Burnham, scoring 48 per cent, reports Somerset Live.

But it appears reviewers on TripAdvisor don't agree with the consumers as they gave the beach four and half stars out of five. One person wrote: "Aside from the stunning beach (dog-welcome all year!) and wonderful hilltop walk with glorious views - there is also the National Trust visitor centre and cafe. We visit several times a month - the cafe has the best pasties for mikes around."

Another wrote: "Lucky with the weather, a nice walk in the fresh air, very beautiful part of the world. If with a dog, be mindful, animals can be out and about on the hills."

Topping the list for best beaches was Bamburgh in Northumberland. This resort won over fans thanks to its beautiful beach, ancient castle and classic seaside charm.

Rory Boland, editor of magazine Which? Travel, said: "Few countries can be home to such a diversity of brilliant seaside breaks.

"Whether you want world-class beaches and utter wilderness, or the bright lights and bucket and spade atmosphere of a resort, the UK has a seaside break made for you. What our survey shows is that it's rarely the most famous destinations that visitors enjoy most.

"Try somewhere new this year and our survey shows you should find fewer crowds and better value."
