We are deeply troubled by the tragic and farcical trial of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on trumped-up charges (Report, 22 May). Aung San Suu Kyi is one of our most distinguished alumni, the revered patron of IGS, and someone who embodies the humanist ideals and norms of our academic community. She has spent 13 out of her past 19 years in confinement because she refuses to be silenced in the face of continuous violations by the Burmese government of basic human rights. Her trial makes a mockery of justice. We demand her immediate and unconditional release, and that of her two female companions. We urge all global citizens who believe in the inherent dignity and honour of the human person to stand in solidarity with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her fellow Burmese dissidents in their darkest hour of need.
