Burlesque The Musical has postponed its West End run until 2027, and its UK tour has also been delayed.
The stage production of the 2010 film was due to kick off its UK tour this weekend in Woking, Surrey, with a West End run at The Arts theatre in Marble Arch, central London, scheduled for September.
Producers have said the show will instead open next month in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, which was due to be its second stop, after “final technical preparations” which have pushed back the start of its UK tour.
The Woking dates have been moved to November 3 until November 7.
“Audiences holding tickets for the original performances will be contacted by their point of sale regarding exchanges or refunds,” producers said.
Burlesque The Musical posted the news on their official Instagram page, saying the West End shows will be postponed “until we move into our new home”.
“All ticket holders will be contacted by The Arts at Marble Arch regarding a full refund.
“We can’t wait to welcome audiences to our Burlesque lounge across the UK from August.
“We are so excited to bring this spectacular production to theatres around the country before returning to London in 2027.”
The caption added: “Unfortunately, this was out of our hands. We know you love the show and we love you right back. Thank you for all your continued support.”
In a statement, producers emphasised that the changes to the London dates are “absolutely a postponement, not a cancellation”.
They added: “We are already exploring opportunities for a major London return in 2027 and look forward to announcing our future West End home in due course.
“This is a strategic decision designed to ensure the production returns to London exactly as we want it to… With all the fabulosity, concert-like experiential quality and razzle-dazzle that our audiences deserve!”
Producers have also said the tour is “fully financed and on a secure footing”.
Burlesque The Musical is produced by a team including Steven Antin, the writer and director behind the 2010 film, as well as Adam Paulden, Jason Haigh-Ellery, Clint Culpepper and In Fine Company.
Pop star Christina Aguilera is a producer.
The musical is based on hit film Burlesque, which tells the story of a small-town girl, Ali, who moves to Los Angeles and works her way up to become the star of a struggling underground burlesque club.
The award-winning movie starred singers Aguilera and Cher, US actor Stanley Tucci and Frozen star Kristen Bell.
