Buriram win, Kirins battered

Buriram's Luong Xuan Truong celebrates after scoring against Nakhon Ratchasima.

While defending champions Buriram United succeeded in closing the gap on leaders Port with a 2-0 victory over Nakhon Ratchasima on Saturday night, former Thai League 1 winners SCG Muang Thong United sustained another thrashing to remain pinned to the bottom of the table.

The Kirins were hammered 3-0 by Samut Prakarn City at their home as the former champions picked up their seventh loss in 10 league outings this year.

The Thunder Castle, who are also having a mixed run this season, were once again below par last night but still succeeded in claiming three points.

The result ensured that the Swat Cats' bid to end their epic losing streak in the league at Buriram's Chang Arena would continue for another year.

Buriram attacked from the beginning and had a chance to gain lead but Pedro Junior's shot went over the bar.

Nakhon Ratchasima had their opportunity soon afterwards but Leandro Assumpacao was denied by Buriram goalkeeper Siwarak Tedsungnoen.

The first goal for the home team came in the 21st minute when Buriram were awarded a free-kick and Luong Xuan Truong's sizzler put the defending champions ahead.

In the the second half, Nakhon Ratchasima found the net only to see Amadou Ouattara ruled offside.

Buriram regained control of the game late in the second and scored their second goal in the 79th minute when Pedro Junior opened the ball for 16-year-old Suphanat Mueanta to seal the fate of the match.

After conceding the second goal, Nakhon Ratchasima tried to come back but their efforts fell short as they failed to stop Buriram from taking three points from the match.

Buriram are now only one point behind Port, who will be seeking a win at Chainat tonight to keep their four-point lead at the top intact. The Thunder Castle, however, have a game in hand.

At the SCG Stadium, Muang Thong United failed once again in their bid to boost the dwindling faith of their fans on Saturday night.

The hosts started off with an attacking game but Samut Prakarn were solid in defence.

Heberty Fernandes and Teerasil Dangda were mostly thwarted in the midfield as the Kirins failed to make any meaningful inroads.

The second half belonged to Samut Prakarn.

Carlos Souza opened the scoring for the visitors in the 65th minute.

As Muang Thong United went out in the search of an equaliser, they found themselves being peppered with counter-attacks and Samut Prakarn added another goal to theirs in the 74th minute through Jaroengsak Wongkorn.

Six minutes later, Teerapol Yodyerd rubbed salt into the Kirins' wounds by making it 3-0 as Samut Prakarn grabbed three points.

Chonburi should have picked up three points but three-goal Diouf Bireme of Trat spoiled the home team's party plans with a strike in the injury time for 3-3 draw.

Patrick Cruz put Chonburi 1-0 ahead in the fifth minute before Diouf equalised in the 30th minute for Trat and the first half ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

Sittichok Phaso of Chonburi scored the second goal in the 69th minute but a minute later, the hosts messed up a defensive effort to see Trat level the score at 2-2 through Diouf.

Chonburi then gained the upper hand one more time with Lukian Almeida scoring in the second minute of injury time.

The Sharks' defence let them down in the last minute.

Former Singapore defender Baihakki Khaizan's cross should have been cleared by Panupong Phonsa but he missed, presenting Diouf to complete the hat-trick and pull of a 3-3 tie.
