Thai League 1 leaders Buriram United and second-placed SCG Muang Thong United secured thrilling wins to reach the Toyota League Cup quarter-finals on Sunday night.
Muang Thong came from behind to earn a hard-fought home win against Bangkok United thanks to a late strike by Thailand forward Teerasil Dangda, while Buriram won on penalties at Chonburi following a 1-1 draw.
The duo join five other top-flight teams -- Chiang Rai United, Ratchaburi, Police Tero, Ubon UMT and Sukhothai -- in the quarter-finals along with second-tier side Air Force Central.
The last-eight draw will be made on Oct 8 with matches to be played on Oct 11.
At SCG Stadium, Bangkok United stunned the Kirins when Jaycee John gave the visitors the lead after 22 minutes.
Having beaten the capital side twice in the league this season, the Kirins equalised after 68 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after Mika Chunualsee was adjudged to have fouled Leandro Assumpcao, and the Brazilian forward made no mistake from the spot.
As the match seemed to be heading into extra time, Teerasil scored the winner with three minutes to go.
Muang Thong coach Totchtawan Sripan said: "We knew it would be a tough game although we had beaten Bangkok United in the league twice this season.
"Although we conceded a first-half goal, we came back strongly in the second half. Our aim is to win every trophy this season."
Muang Thong have also advanced to the FA Cup quarter-finals and are six points behind Buriram in the league.
At the Sharks' Chonburi Stadium, Jakson Coelho was Buriram's hero.
The in-form Brazilian forward scored the opening goal after 19 minutes only for Nurul Sriyankem to equalise with four minutes left.
Neither side could score in extra time and it was Coelho who scored the decisive penalty to beat the Sharks 5-4.
In Sunday's other matches, PT Prachub lost 5-4 to Police Tero, Sukhothai beat Pattaya United on penalties, Rayong FC lost 4-0 to Chiang Rai United, Nong Bua Pichaya lost 3-2 to Ubon UMT on penalties.
