Buriram kick off season on winning note

Buriram United forward Supachai Chaided celebrates after scoring a goal against Chiang Rai United.

Thai League 1 champions Buriram United won their first trophy of the season on Saturday night when they beat FA Cup winners Chiang Rai United 3-1 in the Thailand Champions Cup.

Young forward Supachai Chaided scored twice and new signing Modibo Maiga of Mali added the third for Buriram for a come-from-behind win at Bangkok's Thai Army Sports Stadium.

Brazilian defender Brinner had opened the scoring for the Beetles after just two minutes.

Chiang Rai, who won both the FA Cup and the League Cup last season, were reduced to 10 men in the dying moments when Brazilian forward Bill was sent off for a second bookable offence.

The referee initially did not see his foul on Buriram defender Andres Tunez but gave Bill the marching orders after consulting the VAR.

Chiang Rai got off to a fast start when Brinner headed the ball past Buriram goalkeeper Siwarak Tedsungnoen, who failed to clear a loose lob off a corner.

The match became lively as both sides went on the attack and it was Buriram, winners of the coveted Thai League 1 crown last year, who scored twice just before the interval.

Supachai, one of Thailand's best young stars, equalised in the 44th minute and was on target again moments later.

Three minutes before the final whistle, former West Ham striker Maiga went clear and beat Chiang Rai goalkeeper Saranon Anuin to make it 3-1.

It was Maiga's first goal for Buriram whose chairman Newin Chidchob has vowed to win all major titles this year.
