Buriram face onerous task

Buriram's Jakson Coelho, right, is one of the hottest strikers this season.

Runaway Thai League 1 leaders Buriram United face a difficult match at Chiang Rai United in the FA Cup quarter-finals tonight.

The Thunder Castle will be without Brazilian striker Diogo Luis Santo, who is suspended.

Buriram manager Tatthep Pitakpoolsin said yesterday his team could cope with the absence of the Brazilian hitman.

"We have other players who can play in his position," he said.

Buriram's strike force will be led by Jakson "Jaja" Coelho, another Brazilian, who has been on fire in his first season in Thailand. "We are relatively at full strength and will try to win," Tatthep said.

Chiang Rai vice-chairman Thanapol Wirathepsuporn said: "We have to admit that it is difficult to play against Buriram. We are unlucky to face them in this round. But we will turn bad luck into good luck.

"We will be playing at home and there is enough team spirit about this group. Our players are confident of beating them. Our goal is to win the trophy."

Thai League 1 champions SCG Muang Thong United, who are nine points behind Buriram in the league, travel to Thai League 2 side PTT Rayong.

Muang Thong coach Totchtawan Sripan said: "We are lucky that our league match at the weekend was postponed so our players are fresh. But we can't underestimate Rayong."

Rayong coach Teerasak Pho-on chose to look on the bright side.

"Playing against a strong team like Muang Thong will be a good experience for our players," he said.

"They are favourites to win this match but don't forget that anything can happen in a knockout competition."

Meanwhile, Muang Thong will meet Police Tero at Rajamangala Stadium while Chiang Rai face Ratchaburi at Supachalasai Stadium in the League Cup semi-finals on Nov 4 following yesterday's draw.
