Buriram drop points again at Sukhothai

Buriram's Andres Tunez vies with Sukhothai's Kongnateechai Boonma during a Thai League 1 match.

Defending champions Buriram United suffered another setback on Saturday when they could only manage a 1-1 draw at Sukhothai in Thai League 1.

Buriram avoided a second successive defeat thanks to Supachai Chaided's 85th minute equaliser at Thung Thalay Luang Stadium.

Second-placed Buriram, who lost 2-1 at Chainat in midweek, are now five points behind leaders Port with a game in hand.

Led by striker John Baggio, the hosts attacked the Thunder Castle from the start and were rewarded for their efforts in the 13th minute.

After seeing his shot go over the bar, Baggio opened the scoring.

Buriram then regrouped and piled the pressure on the Fire Bats.

Buriram defender Andres Tunez's header hit the woodwork and Pansa Hemviboon's shot sailed over the bar.

In the second half, Buriram went on an all-out attack and Pedro Junior came close to scoring.

In the 58th minute, Sukhothai almost doubled their lead but Iain Ramsay's header was saved by Buriram goalkeeper Siwarak Tedsungnoen.

It was one-way traffic as Buriram threw everything at Sukhothai who were dangerous on counter-attacks.

With five minutes to go, the Thunder Castle equalised when Tunez's shot deflected off Supachai and went into the net.

The league is now taking a break for the King's Cup to be held at Buriram United's Chang Arena.

Thai League 1 will resume on June 12 when Buriram host relegation contenders PTT Rayong.
