Thai League 1 champions Buriram United rode out a late storm of pressure to edge South Korean giants Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors 1-0 in their second AFC Champions League Group G game yesterday.
Supachok Sarachart’s second-half goal proved enough to stabilise Buriram’s campaign after their 3-0 defeat to the Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds last week.
In last night’s other Group G game, Beijing FC drew 0-0 with Urawa.
After two games, Urawa have four points, Buriram and Jeonbuk three each, and Beijing one.
Jeonbuk, the South Korean champions, beat Beijing FC 3-1 in their first match of the group.
At Chang Arena, Buriram were mostly on the receiving end at the their home ground as a sparse crowd saw the South Korean side miss a host of chances with Ricardo Lopes and Lee Dong-Gook being the main culprits.
The Thunder Castle got the break they had been betting on five minutes into the second half with a lightning counter-attack.
Brazilian Pedro Junior raced up front before passing the ball to Supachok who scored with an angular sizzler.
The setback galvanised Jeonbuk into action as they went all out in search of an equaliser.
The visitors were short on luck as well as a blistering drive by Lopes beat Buriram goalkeeper Siwarak Tedsungnoen but the ball rammed into the bar.
