Burial details for Freddie Starr confirmed after fears of 'pauper's grave'

Freddie Starr's body is set to be flown back to Huyton where he will be buried next to his mum Hilda.

Freddie passed away in the Costa Del Sol last week - after suffering a heart attack aged 76.

The comedian became a recluse in his later life, rarely leaving his home , after suffering with money problems.

It was thought Freddie may be buried in Spain, but a post on his official Facebook page confirmed the star would be laid to rest at home.

The post read: "Freddie Starr is to be buried by his beloved mum in Liverpool.

"His estranged family have decided to fly his body from Spain, ending fears the penniless comic would end up in a pauper’s grave on the Costa del Sol.

"He will be laid to rest alongside Hilda at the family plot in the city’s Huyton area."

The comedian was known by fans for his eccentric and often unpredictable behaviour, rising to national prominence in the early 1970s after appearing on Opportunity Knocks.

Starr's fellow comic Jim Davidson was among those paying tribute to the Merseyside-born personality.

He tweeted: "Just heard the news. Freddie Starr was the greatest."

Stan Boardman said Freddie had "funny bones" and was one of the best comedians he'd ever known.

And actor Bobby Davro called Starr the "most naturally funny man I've ever seen".
