Burglary suspect leads high-speed chase, then vanishes into wash

Sept. 03--A burglary suspect who led deputies on a pursuit from Diamond Bar to Pico Rivera early Wednesday afternoon drove onto a rugged dirt road, ditched his vehicle and ran into a wash under a heavy canopy of trees.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department suspended its search for the man at 4:30 p.m. after deputies could not find him. However, detectives planned to continue looking into the man's whereabouts.

Deputies began following the man about noon in connection with a burglary in the 800 block of Pantera Drive in Diamond Bar, according to the Sheriff's Department.

The man drove to the 10 Freeway and continued onto the 57 Freeway before getting on the 210 Freeway, speeding as he swerved through heavy traffic.

Deputies and officers with the California Highway Patrol followed as the man moved onto the 605 Freeway and got off at Washington Boulevard in Pico Rivera. He sped down several residential streets and headed toward a dirt road along the San Gabriel River.

The man drove onto the dirt road, which was parallel to train tracks bordering Pico Rivera and unincorporated Whittier. The man, who wore a bucket hat and dark clothing, then ditched the vehicle and made a run for it.
