Burglary suspect found in attic after police arrest wrong man on M1

Police found a burglary suspect in the attic of a house after arresting an innocent man with a stinger device on the M1.

Investigating officers spotted a car on the M1 at Lisburn that they linked to the crime in Belfast and suspicious activity in Antrim.

The PSNI brought the car to a stop on the motorway using a stinger device to prevent a pursuit.

The driver was arrested and the car was seized.

But when officers studied the CCTV footage they realised the arrested man in the car was in fact the owner of the car.

A PSNI spokesman said: “After arriving at custody, footage of the incident was checked and it was confirmed that the male arrested was not the male who was suspected of being involved in the burglary.”

Then they received more information which led them to an address where they discovered "the true suspect in the attic".

The PSNI spokesman said: “It turns out he [the suspect]had taken the car without permission from the owner, resulting in the owner being caught up in the whole thing.

“The driver of the car has been released, and the other male spent the night in custody, with a few tough questions to answer today.”
