Burglary suspect chased down by police dog after being spotted by an eagle-eyed neighbour

A suspected burglar was chased down by a police dog after being spotted by an eagle-eyed neighbour.

Officers were called to the street in Stalybridge in the early hours of Wednesday morning following reports of 'suspicious activity'.

When they got there, they discovered a home had been broken into and began searching the area.

The police dog managed to help track down the suspect, and after a chase through gardens a 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Evidence was also recovered nearby.

Inspector Andy Holden said that over lockdown reports of burglaries in Tameside had dropped by around a third, but in recent weeks there had been a spate of break-ins in Stalybridge, understood to be around a dozen.

Officers from Ashton police station were called to the scene (Manchester Evening News.)

He thanked the neighbour who called police on Wednesday morning, and issued a warning to others to make sure their homes were secure - despite the hot weather.

Insp Holden said: "Through the period of lockdown and since, there has been a decrease in reports of burglary across Tameside.

"This year to date we have had a decrease of around a third in reported offences.

"However, due to issues in previous years, the decision was made to set up a Volume Crime Team to focus on these types of offences and bring offenders to justice more quickly.

"The investment in staff will continue over the coming months and Tameside police remain committed to tackling this type of crime.

"We have noticed a small cluster of offences around the Stalybridge area, which although still significantly lower than of previous years, has caused concern to residents and officers alike.

"I would like to thank the residents who assisted us by reporting this incident.

"I would also encourage others to report any suspicious activity as soon as possible so that we can have the best chance of responding and locating suspects.

"A lot of people are in a position to enjoy the current good weather but is  important to remember that thieves are looking for opportunities to commit crimes.

"Make sure doors and windows are secure and consider using house alarms and other prevention devices to deter would be thieves.

"Please keep car keys out of sight of doors and windows and remove valuable from cars when left unattended.

"If anyone has any information about people committing offences in Stalybridge or other areas I would like to encourage them to ring crime stoppers on 0800 555 111."
