Burglars target vacant buildings on South Side

Police are warning residents about burglars targeting vacant buildings this month in Gresham, Fernwood and Brainerd on the South Side.

In each case, someone entered a property that is vacant or being rehabilitated and stole large appliances, including furnaces, water heaters, refrigerators and stoves, according to a community alert from Chicago police. Tools and copper piping were also taken.

The burglaries occurred:

  • Oct. 1 in the 9000 block of South Normal Avenue;
  • Between Oct. 1 and Oct. 7 in the 10500 block of South Parnell Avenue;
  • Between Oct. 8 and Oct. 15 in the 1000 block of West 92nd Place;
  • Between Oct. 10 and Oct. 15 in the 8400 block of South Eggleston Avenue;
  • Between Oct. 12 and Oct. 19 in the 9100 block of South Aberdeen Street;
  • Between Oct. 16 and Oct. 19 in the 8900 block of South Elizabeth Street; and
  • Between Oct. 16 and Oct. 19 in the 400 block of West 99th Place.

Police did not provide any suspect descriptions.
