Burglars target shop just weeks after beloved owner's tragic death

Four men broke into a convenience store less than four weeks after the owner passed away.

Police were called to Dave & Prem's SMS Village Store, in Ainsworth, just after 7pm last night (Wednesday January 27).

According to cops, four men managed to get into the shop through a window but nothing was taken.

No arrests have been made, according to Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

The shop belongs to Premila 'Prem' Varsani, the widow of Devendra 'Dave' Varsani, 47, who died from Covid-19 earlier this month.

The village of Ainsworth was devastated by Dave's death, with the shopkeeper described as a 'pillar of the community'.

Following the reported burglary, Prem and Dave's daughter Anvi told the Manchester Evening News : "It just seems like one thing after another at the moment. We're all really shocked and my mum is shaken up.

"It's really unexpected because Ainsworth is usually a really peaceful village and in 24 years, mum and dad never had an incident.

"They didn't have time to get anything because we realised quite quickly."

Alongside his wife Prem, Dave opened Dave & Prem's SMS Village Store, in Ainsworth, in 1997.

"He's made it into the success it is now and everyone was really proud of him," his daughter said after his death.

"He always did everything he could for us. Everything he did was for me, my mum and my brother.

"As a family man, he was a very cheeky guy. He was always trying to play pranks on us.

A GMP spokesman said: "Officers were called just after 7pm on Wednesday 27 January 2021 to a report of a burglary at a business premises on Church Street, Ainsworth.

"Officers attended and enquiries established four males had gained entry to the property via a window.

"The offenders later fled the scene. Nothing is believed to have been taken.

"No arrests have been made. Enquiries are ongoing."
